Captain America #1

I’ll admit being a bit confused where exactly this new volume of Captain America fits in continuity. Set in an undisclosed date that doesn’t quite seem the 60s nor relocated to the present day, Captain America #1 offers a new story of early-days Captain America only a week or so after he’s found and thawed-out by the Avengers. We get cameos her from the likes of Iron Man and the Fantastic Four, but the issue is really about Steve Rogers trying to find his place in a new world.

The Authority #3

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to a higher Authority. The Authority #3 acts as a bit of a transitionary issue with our heroes licking their wounds following the attacks by the Children of Kaizen Gamorra and discovering where they plan to attack next. Spent mostly onboard the Carrier, the issue works on building the team dynamic and explaining a bit about how the Carrier works as the team plans to stop from the next attack on Los Angeles.

Secret Six #5

The first thing you notice about Secret Six #5 is the art has changed considerably with Roger Cruz taking over for Stephen Segovia. The second thing you notice is there is no Catman in this issue. Neither of these things is an improvement.

Secret Six #5 catches up with Deadshot, Dreamer, and Black Alice being the “guests” of Checkmate where they also find Amanda Waller and have a second go-round with Jeannette after her failed attempt to get the trio to join in and help Checkmate with their own plans for Waller. We also get a bit more detail on just what Dreamer did to the woman (and why Checkmate wants her alive).

Justice League Unlimited #8

With the world in peril and Gorilla Grodd, now enhanced with Darkseid’s Omega Energy, and his Legion of Doom near victory, Air Wave recruits heroes from across time and space to help stop the villain offering an enjoyable end to the arc (although there will apparently be plenty of aftermath to clean up in the issues to come). This leads to an overload of heroes hitting the Watchtower leading to some fun comic panels.

Usagi Yojimbo: Ten Thousand Plums #4

The second story of the five-issue arc begins here with Miyamoto Usagi and Yukichi arriving at a new town for some much-needed rest. With some cash following their recent adventure with Gen, the pair splurge taking advantage of an inn known for its hot tubs. While there, Usagi meets a Christian on a pilgrimage, like many others, to a local Buddhist shrine which legend say has the power to heal the sick. Usgai relates the odd occurrence to his traveling companion who it seems doesn’t know much about Christianity allowing Usagi to recount the little he does know to Yukichi.
