Batman • Superman – World’s Finest #2

The Justice League is under attack. With the help of the Doom Patrol, Batman is able to save Superman from the Kryptonite poisoning he was infected with in the series’ first issue. However, that’s just a start as the pair jump back into action to start saving the rest of the heroes beginning with Felix Faust‘s attack on a defenseless Billy Batson (although the evil magician doesn’t know the true reason why he’s hunting a small child he has prevented from speaking).

With the introduction of Supergirl, Batman • Superman – World’s Finest #2 also begins a B-story sending Kara and Robin back in time to learn more about an immortal ancient Chinese warlord known as The Devil Nezha who has some connection to current events (but I’ll admit being a bit confused by it all). There’s obviously some tension between the two younger heroes, that isn’t explained, but makes for some fun back-and-forth

The Rocketeer: The Great Race #1

After getting shot down by some Nazi spies, Cliff Secord has decided to retire the Rocketeer. But what’s a pilot turned part-time hero to do to make a living? And then comes the opportunity almost to good to be true.

The Rocketeer: The Great Race #1 introduces Cliff to a local millionaire who wants Cliff to fly his prototype plane in a winner-take-all race from California to France. Despite the dangerous of such a journey, even Betty is onboard. After all, it is safer than getting shot down by Nazis. However, trouble looms for our hero just on the horizon.

Since it feels like Cliff might be out of costume for some or even most of this four-issue mini-series, we get some early panels of the Rocketeer in action before the larger story kicks off. Next, on to the Great Race.

Marauders #1

Kitty Pryde captains a new group of Marauders whose adventures kick off here with the rescue of a new mutant out of control in Wyoming followed by an encounter on Krakoa involving the mystery puzzle box that leads Pryde to Cassandra Nova (Professor X‘s demented twin sister). Despite her concerns, Pryde adds her to the team whose other members include Psylocke, Tempo, Aurora, Akihiro, Lucas Bishop, and Somnus.

Marauders, using the odd reliable X-Men trick of taking a couple beloved characters and filling out a roster with random others, is an odd comic in terms of style with the art bleeding over into anime at times. The results are weird, but still fun. The team’s first mission may be their last as they fly into Shi’ar Galaxy looking for answers about the First Mutants, secrets that apparently the Shi’ar are willing to kill to protect.

Moon Knight #10

Moon Knight #10 offers a battle between Moon Knight and Rutherford Winner intercut with scenes of Moon Knight talking over the situation with the pair’s shared psychiatrist Andrea Sterman. At least that’s what appears to be happening. However, things aren’t exactly what they seem.

Pushing Marc Spector down a darker path, we see the Fist of Khonshu in a vengeful mode towards Zodiac and the villain’s latest minion he’s used to screw with our hero. The villain wanted an untethered Moon Knight. Be careful what you wish for.

While the half-black/half-white costume isn’t my favorite (I prefer Moon Knight in all white, be it hero or suit) the art of Alessandro Cappuccio does hide parts of the costume in shadow while highlighting the glow of the white as well.

Black Widow #15

Closing out both the arc and the series, Black Widow #15 wraps up the “Die By the Blade” storyline as Natasha survives the Living Blade, thanks to some old friends, and gets her arm back, thanks to a new one. There’s plenty of action here even if the larger arc of the Living Blade feels cut short.

While not the run’s best issue, Black Widow #15 does offer a little bit of everything we’ve come to expect from the creative team including several of our heroes kicking ass while supporting their friend and more of Spider-Girl‘s wisecracking along the way (I’m pretty sure it’s Anya who I’ll miss most here). There are also a couple of surprises including the return of a recent foe whose own story looks far from finished. As for what’s next for Widow and the various members of her motley crew, well, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
