Usagi Yojimbo #22

Usagi Yojimbo #22

Miyamoto Usagi‘s travels with his cousin Yukichi Yamamoto continue in part one of “Ransom” as the two wanderers have mad their way out of Lord Hikiji’s province only to run into new trouble when their paths cross those of Kitsune and Kiyoko. It doesn’t take the young warrior long to discover the sneakiness of the two thieves as they tease Yukichi before showing the travelers the thieves’ latest score: a ledger of corruption and payoffs.

There’s some fun here at Yukichi’s expense as the naïve young warrior sees a bit more of the world than he was expecting in a pair of thieves who seem to periodically show up just to drive Usagi crazy.

Harley Quinn: The Animated Series – The Eat, Bang, Kill Tour #2

  • Title: Harley Quinn: The Animated Series – The Eat, Bang, Kill Tour #2
  • Comic Vine: link
  • Writer: Tee Franklin
  • Artist: Max Sarin

Harley Quinn: The Animated Series - The Eat, Bang, Kill Tour #2The second issue of Harley Quinn: The Animated Series – The Eat, Bang, Kill Tour features Harley and Ivy together one-step ahead of the obsessed Gordon which leads the pair to Catwoman (a character with plenty of space to grow given her short appearance on the show). Ivy’s internal conflict at the happiness she feels for giving into her love for Harley and the utter panic when she is reminded just how truly crazy Harley is continues to be the main focus of the story.

We do get an appearance from Batman, and some confirmation about Selena’s romantic history with the hero in this universe, but he remains a tertiary figure to the larger events playing out in Gotham City (which has been abandoned by the United States).Fans of Batman: The Animated Series will get a kick out of the hyenas’ role in the story here (as well as Harley’s obliviousness why Catwoman wouldn’t be the best babysitter for them).

Green Lantern #6

Green Lantern #6Green Lantern #6 is notable mostly for the first meeting between Sojourner Mullein  and Sinestro on New Korugar while Simon Baz looks to calm down the out of control of the rampaging Teen Lantern (mostly off-panel, which turns out to be just as disappointing as it sounds).

The issue doesn’t offer much in the way of action, but the first meeting between Sojourner and Sinestro is pretty good stuff with each feeling each other out and get an understanding where the other stands in a universe with the Green Lantern Corps in shambles.

In the B-story that won’t die, the comic also catches back up with John Stewart, the refugees he rescued from the void, and the rest of the former Lanterns heading off to save Kilowog from some Gold Centurions (whatever those are).

[DC, $3.99]

Blue and Gold #2

Blue and Gold #2After being rebuffed by the Justice League, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle set out to make a name for themselves. As with most of Booster Gold’s ideas, things don’t exactly go to plan. The heroes are able to recover some stolen Kord technology but also earn the animosity of the company’s board leading to Ted Kord’s exit. So much for them picking up the duo’s super-hero bills.

While it might not be as strong as the opening issue, writer Dan Jurgens and artist Ryan Sook still offers some fun to the pair’s antics (with a toned down social media prescience commenting on Booster’s livestreaming heroics).

Ted’s removal from Kord Industries certainly puts the pressure on our heroes to make their own way going forward without the financial backing and high-tech gadgets at their disposal.

Green Lantern 2021 Annual #1

Green Lantern 2021 Annual #1The Green Lantern 2021 Annual #1 answers a couple of big questions to the ongoing storyline unfolding in Green Lantern where the Corps is in shambles following the destruction of the Power Battery on Oa. First, how did Jessica Cruz become a member of the Sinestro Corps? And second, where the hell has Hal Jordan been?

The comic spends the majority of the time answering the first question, starting with Jessica dropping off three captured prisoners on New Korugar using one of the Yellow Lanterns own rings. Impressed, Sinestro offers Jessica a role within his corps which she initially declines but does keep the ring in order to get back to Earth where she learns how to make good use of the fear inside herself, and in others, to do some good. Of all the Green Lanterns, Jessica is the obvious choice to find a new path and I’ll be curious to see where it takes her from here.
