Suicide Squad #4

Suicide Squad #4 comic reviewThings go to hell pretty quickly for the Squad in issue #4. After the team returns with Red-X, Waller attempts unsuccessfully to break the new recruit up until he breaks free revealing he actually wanted to be taken captive.

The character originated on television as an alter-ego for the Dick Grayson version of Robin. The comic version we get here feels more like Jason Todd. Be it Todd or someone else completely (we never learn his true identity), the character would obviously be a tremendous catch for the Squad (or an intriguing foil in any number of series).

Black Cat #7

Black Cat #7 comic reviewBlack Cat #7 wraps up some long-running storylines concerning Black Cat‘s heist over the past couple of years and her rivalry with Odessa Drake and the Thieves Guild. Betrayed by the Black Fox, the Black Cat goes to extraordinary lengths to break her mentor’s deal with Guilded Saint.

While Felicia manages to leverage things enough to free Manhattan from the evil deity’s grasp, her plan isn’t altogether as satisfying as I hoped. There’s certainly emotion here, and the framing of events to allow the Black Cat to lay out her recent actions to the Fox before the big reveal plays well. However, in a storyline that saw the character rip of the biggest names of the Marvel Universe and get immortality, everything returning to the status quo feels a bit underwhelming.

Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land #4

Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land #4 comic reviewThe four-issue mini-series comes to a close as Hellboy and Professor Bruttenholm‘s time on the hidden island ends but not before Scarlett Santiago fights for the fate of the world by battling the raised vampire Vesperra who the ancestors of the island’s current inhabitants locked away centuries before.

The first of several planned mini-series involving adventures of a young Hellboy, the only limitations to the series are that it forces Hellboy to the sidelines when the action starts, leaving him mostly a bystander. Still, it’s fun to see what the younger version of the character got up to and his reactions to each bizarre situation he and his father manage to stumble into.

Black Widow #7

Black Widow #7 comic reviewBlack Widow #7 works as a transitionary issue moving the comic further from the opening arc and setting up a new group of fierce females (despite Black Widow consistently telling Yelena Belova that she’s not interested in starting their own version of the Red Room). While offering Lucy, AKA Marigold, sanctuary, Widow hits up Anya Corazon to infiltrate Apogee.

We don’t learn much more about Apogee here, other than its members are referred to as the Olio whose ceremony the Widows crash only to see their target disappear (literally). We also see first-hand that the power boost they offer to their flock can have dramatic, and permanent, side-effects.

Star Wars Adventures: The Weapon of A Jedi #1

Star Wars Adventures: The Weapon of A Jedi #1 comic reviewSet between the events of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, the first issue of the four-issue mini-series offers a solo mission for Luke. The series is an adaptation of the young adult novel and the first issue puts Luke on the surface of the planet of Devaron pulled by a calling in the Force he doesn’t quite understand after being shot down by Imperials.

The beginning of a larger story, the first issue really serves to set up the three remaining issues to come ending with Luke on the edge of the forbidden Eedit Temple. The issue also introduces us to a few characters, such as Farnay and Sarco Plank as locals who feel like they will have a larger part in the story as it unfolds.
