Shang-Chi #1

Shang-Chi #1 comic reviewThe first issue of the new five-issue mini-series begins with a flashback featuring Zheng Zu and the Five Weapons Society providing some context to the group and to our title character, Shang-Chi. It also offers a far-too-short cameo by everyone’s favorite walking talking dragon in purple underpants.

Moving several years into the future, the story starts in earnest with a fight over control of the current version of the group. Although victorious in single combat, Sister Hammer doesn’t get the ghostly approval for her rule (which leads to her sending minions after person the dead founder wants to pick-up the torch).

Catwoman #25

Catwoman #25 comic reviewCatwoman has returned to Gotham City in the over-sized Catwoman #25 which begins with the burglary of the Graves, Willock, and Crane building for the Penguin and the Riddler before double-crossing the both of them in order to pay back towards part of the trouble she has caused. The story also has inter-cut sequences of Catwoman’s dance with a Bengal Tiger making reference to the dangerous line she continues to walk but always manages to survive.

The comic’s other two stories center around Catwoman’s return to her childhood haunts of Alleytown where she shows up a trio of current street hustlers and later deals with her cat who narrates the strange but kinda fun final story.

Once and Future #11

Once and Future #11 comic reviewAfter killing Beowulf, who Merlin and Zombie Arthur sent after them by tricking the legendary hero into doing their bidding, Duncan and his grandmother are forced to deal with Grendel who attacks Bridgette‘s retirement community creating quite a mess.

Duncan arrives in time to help, much to the chagrin of his driver and the local police who are not happy about the inexplicable situation, but it’s Bridgette who strikes the killing blow as she expertly slices off the monster’s arm with the help of the groundskeeper’s chainsaw. The sight of the bloody senior citizen wielding a chainsaw against a mythical beast creates the issue’s lasting image. However, even after making sure the poem can continue without its hero, things aren’t quite finished just yet. Remember, Grendel had a mother.

Darth Vader #5

Darth Vader #5 comic reviewDarth Vader‘s search for answers about the death of Padme Amidala and the birth of his son comes to a close. A final clue in Padme’s beautifully rendered tomb leads Vader to the former Rebel base on Polis Massa where Padme died. However, the long-abandoned base has few specifics about what caused his wife’s death or anything to ease the Dark Lord of the Sith’s conscience.

Needing to release his anger on someone, Vader allows those who betrayed him on Naboo, loyalists and freedom fighters who believe Darth Vader is responsible for the deaths of both Padme and Anakin (which is true… from a certain point of view) to follow him to Polis Massa and deal with them once and for all. Their desire for vengeance ends poorly.

Detective Comics #1027 comic reviewLike many of DC Comics’ recent anniversary issues, Detective Comics #1027 (which marks 1,000 issues since the first appearance of the Batman in Detective Comics #27) offers a collection of stories and art featuring one of the comic industry’s most beloved characters.

Even if it lacks a single great stand-out story, the collection is solid. The best of the tales collected here, “The Master Class,” features all of the best-known Batman sidekicks winding up investigating the same body left on a Gotham City rooftop.

“Blowback” centers around Batman’s ability to escape a death trap (while also thinking back on the many he has survived over the years). “Many Happy Returns” showcases the Joker‘s odd behavior of sending Batman strange birthday every month for years. “Rookie” offers the struggles of a newbie cop in the most corrupt police force in the world. Batman and Robin team-up with Deadman in “Ghost Story.” A business rival attempts to frighten Bruce Wayne in “Fore.” “Odyssey” offers a decades-long mystery in which the search for the ship of art belonging to Batman’s grandfather continues.
