Green Hornet #2

Green Hornet #2 comic reviewAlthough they initially mistake the strange being in front of them for an alien, and the creature does everything in its power to force that assumption, Britt Reid and Kato discover the creature before them to be a British astronaut transformed through his reintroduction to Earth’s atmosphere as his secret space station was destroyed by a passing spaceship.

Seeking answers and revenge on the pilot of the spacecraft that led both to his transformation and the death of his fellow astronaut, the creature is in no mood for the Green Hornet’s attempt at an olive branch demanding answers and the location of the pilot who he blames for his current condition.

Batman & the Outsiders #16

Batman & the Outsiders #16 comic reviewThe story 16 issues in the making finally arrives as the Outsiders face Ra’s al Ghul who plans to unleash his new weapon on the world. In “The Demon’s Fire, Finale,” Batman leads the Outsiders into battle but it’s two of the team’s members who steal the show. First, Orphan mops the floor with the League of Assassins and Black Lightning flexes his enhanced powers against the Demon’s Head who offers Jefferson the opportunity to be a hero to a greater world.

I don’t know that any payoff would be worth such a wait, but Batman & the Outsiders #16 does deliver the conflict teased since the launch of the series. The real question, now that Ra’s has been beaten (for now), is what happens to the Outsiders?

Superman #25

Superman #25 comic reviewSince his arrival at DC Comics, writer Brian Michael Bendis has offered up several intriguing stories. Unfortunately, the over-sized Superman #25 isn’t one of them. Despite the extra pages (and increased price), the comic feels incomplete.

What Superman #25 does offer is two storylines, neither of which is resolved. The first involves an alien race, planet, and character all known as Synmar who have apparently been watching over the universe in their own way for millennia. They witness the destruction of Krypton and recognize the possible threat of a sole survivor on Earth and keep vigilance. However, after seeing what he becomes they decide to make their own Superman.

SHAZAM! #14

SHAZAM! #14 comic reviewSHAZAM! #14 concludes the “SHAZAM and the Seven Magic Lands” arc as Billy Batson is able to free his father from Mr. Mind‘s influence (but, sadly unable to to make C.C. Batson any less of a douche putting a damper on the family’s victory).

The issue also marks the return of the mentally-deranged Superboy Prime aware of the previous DCU timelines and calling out the Marvel Family by their historic names. He offers a threat so large we see Billy and Black Adam work together to stop him. The Superboy of an Earth destroyed in Crisis, who became frustrated with the world that was reborn without him before going all murder-crazy, has apparently been locked-up in the Monster Lands for years.

Young Justice #18

Young Justice #18 comic reviewYoung Justice delivers a Stephanie Brown issue? After arcs involving the team coming together, getting stuck on various alternate Earths, and helping the Justice League, Young Justice #18 offers a more personal tale as Drake helps his girlfriend hunt down her father. And they aren’t the only ones looking.

Perhaps no other character got the shaft as hard as Stephanie Brown did in DC’s New 52. From a break-out Bat-Family star to a sideline player, she still hasn’t recovered. While I would still like the character to get a better alter-ego than Spoiler, the issue works well with Drake and Spoiler teaming up to track down Cluemaster.
