Batman: The Adventures Continue #5

Batman: The Adventures Continue #5 comic reviewJason Todd continues to hide in the shadows, although not entirely unnoticed, while Deathstroke plays the role of crime-fighter to win over the Bat-Family. Much of the issue centers around Robin teaming-up with Gotham’s new “hero” to take down Firefly (to the displeasure of Batman).

A C-list villain at best, writers Alan Burnett and Paul Dini do a good job of selling Firefly as a legitimate threat to the team of Robin and Deathstroke (while also explaining what the villain was really up to the the late plot twist).

Birds of Prey

Birds of Prey #1 comicsOriginally conceived as the start of a new series for DC’s Black Label, this giant single-issue from writer Brian Azzarello and artist Emanuela Lupacchino features Harley Quinn‘s return to Gotham City where she quickly becomes involved in the Huntress stalking a brutal crime syndicate and a trio of assassins. Of course, Harley sees circumstances as fate pushing her in a new direction.

Reading this all at once, you can tell very quickly that the story was meant to be broken up into several issues with climaxes every 22 pages or so. I’ll admit I was a bit confused what versions of each character we’re getting here as well as when exactly this is supposed to take place.

I also have some complaints over Dinah mooning over a former friend-with-benefits (who gets way too many pages here) she admittedly didn’t even like and introducing Renee Montoya as a dirty cop with questionable allegiances. The scenes of Dinah rolling around in bed or in just a towel also feel a bit forced (perhaps trying to fit into the more “adult” themes of the Black Label?).

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #271

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #271 comicsAt it’s best G.I. JOE offers a mix of action and goofy over-the-top storytelling. G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #271 offers both as “Snake Hunt” continues with the Joes planning Throwdown‘s (who Cobra still mistakenly believe is the original Snake Eyes) rescue, the captive making a move of his own, and Destro explaining to the Baroness why he has chosen to ally himself with Zartan rather than Cobra Commander.

There are three stand-out moments in this issue. One involves Throwdown attempting escape in front of his armed guarding yelling in vain for him to stop. Another features the an all-star line-up of Joes packing into buses as if on some kind of school field trip. And last, the team pulls out all the stops in rescuing their captive comrade by even dusting off and deploying the Defiant.

Far Sector #6

Far Sector #6 comic reviewFar Sector #6 offers a quiet, contemplative issue before its final pages set-up the series’ next big action sequence. In the wake of the riots, and the government’s brutal response to them (something all too topical considering what is happening now), the City Enduring’s referendum on the Emotion Exploit is less than a week away.

Neither the comic’s mysteries nor the politics of the alien world are explored much in the latest issue. Instead, Far Sector #6 turns inward to focus on its heroine and her struggle to deal emotionally with a charged situation millions of light years from Earth on the farthest reach of the galaxy.

Justice League #45

Justice League #45 comic reviewJim Corrigan has been separated from the Spectre and locked himself away in Tartarus. DC’s untethered Spirit of Vengeance is less than happy about the new arrangement as his thirst for vengeance infects the members of the Justice League pitting them against each other by inflaming old arguments and grudges.

The out of control Spectre is really just an excuse to pit hero against hero for the issue as the heroes try to see through the vengeance poured into them, but struggle against the base nature the Spectre’s wrath is fueling. Finally gathering their wits, the team comes to realize what has happened and where they must go to fix the situation. However, the locales of Themyscira may have something to say about that.
