Suicide Squad #5

Suicide Squad #5 comic reviewSuicide Squad #5 opens in mid-battle in Australia with the Squad kicking the shit out of Captain Boomerang who some want to recruit and some want dead. Returning to base with Boomerang doesn’t clear things up as, after being ordered to execute the same target they just risked their lives to retrieve, Deadshot leads a mutiny beginning with ending Lok‘s short run with a bullet to the face.

This was my first check-in with the series since it’s premiere issue. Overall the comic feels a bit bloated with extra characters (although, in the tradition of Suicide Squad, you would expect many of these to be cannon fodder at some point). With everyone now after them, I’d expect some causalities in the issues to come.

Birds of Prey: Sirens of Justice #1

Birds of Prey: Sirens of Justice #1 comic reviewBirds of Prey: Sirens of Justice #1 offers a team-up between Harley Quinn, Black Canary, and Huntress when Harley brings information about a hospital lost in a sync hole and its connection to the local mob. The pairing of Harley with the Birds of Prey is obviously inspired by the recent film, but for the storyline of this comic DC turns to Gail Simone whose history with the characters is well-established (even if most of the Birds she usually writes don’t make an appearance here).

The issue offers some mystery and misdirection as Black Canary wants to trust Harley but rightfully deduces she’s not telling the whole truth about her interest in the case. Huntress is less inclined to give Ms. Quinn the benefit of the doubt. And when Poison Ivy shows up all hell breaks loose.

Avengers #33

Avengers #33 comic reviewOn the night of a Supermoon, a new storyline begins with Moon Knight targeting the mystical Avengers one-by-one. Avengers #33 opens in the Himalayas where Moon Knight takes down Iron Fist. Making stops to take down Doctor Strange, crush Thor, and steal Ghost Rider‘s car, the former Avenger continues to increase his power.

The issue features Moon Knight is several different looks including the classic all-white costume as the comic comes to an end with the character victorious. The comic doesn’t allow us into the mind of the character for most of the comic, although towards the end it does appear that his multiple personalities are all doing just dandy. And they all appear onboard with the current mission.

Ghost-Spider #9

Ghost-Spider #9 comic reviewMost of Ghost-Spider #9 features our spider-heroine mulling over the unexpected offer of friendship and team-up by Johnny Storm and Sue Storm. Despite her initial reluctance (and multiple warnings from her Spidey-Sense) Gwen decides to go forward with the meeting that ends with the trio taking down some smugglers (with what the Storms really want from Gwen yet to be revealed).

Returning to an ongoing theme, we see some father/daughter discussion about Gwen’s choice of after-school activities (especially given what her father sees as Gwen’s increasingly reckless behavior). There’s also plenty of Spider-Gwen swinging around the city and contemplating school and social media.

Doctor Aphra #1

Doctor Aphra #1 comic reviewSet after the events of The Empire Strikes Back, evil archaeologist Chelli Lona Aphra earns a new series opening with her plundering the recently-evacuated Rebel base on Hoth, and running into a bit of Imperial trouble, before accepting a job from Shadow University student Detta Yao. Yao is on the hunt for the mythical Rings of Vaale (which, it turns out, may be real, very valuable, and very dangerous).

The new series’ initial issue is a good mix of action and story with several characters to introduce including Aphra and her team of Just Lucky and Black Krrsantan, Yao, and an old acquaintance of Aphra in archaeologist Eustacia Okka, along with introducing the Rings and the team’s chief rival in their search for them in Ronen Tagge and the Tagge family.
