Far Sector #5

Far Sector #5 comic reviewOn the furthest edge of the known universe, rookie Green Lantern Sojourner Mullein continues to search for answers into the City Enduring’s first crime in 500 years. With the help of an Artificial Intelligence, the Green Lantern searches for answers and patterns to the mystery, although answers continue to allude her.

After teasing readers for several issues about Sojourner’s past and her relationship to the Corps, Far Sector #5 finally starts to fill in some of the gaps to her past, offering glimpses into the history of injustice she has fought her entire life, and the attempts of service which would eventually lead to a once in a lifetime offer (interestingly, it appears the ring did not choice its wearer in this case).

Star Wars Adventures #31

Star Wars Adventures #31 comic reviewStar Wars Adventures #31 gives us a Rey and Poe Dameron team-up as Rey lives out a long fantasy of spending time flying a working X-Wing and gets some piloting pointers from the Resistance’s best pilot in this all-ages adventure.

The banter between the pair, something not seen much in the sequel films, is the best part of the story. As many of these stories do, “Squad Goals” brings in characters from other corners of the Star Wars galaxy. Issue #31 brings back the buzz droids from Revenge of the Sith who attack Rey and Poe while training as Rey proves an able student for Poe (even if her mentor only destroyed one Death Star).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #104

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #104 comic reviewI loved this issue. After keeping the Turtles separate following the death of their father, they reunite in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #104 not to face some imminent threat but to finally share their grief with their loved ones. Donnie‘s trip to Mutant Town proves to be the catalyst needed to push Raphael and Donnie to returning to Leonardo and Michelangelo and tap into the strong family dynamic at the core of the title.

That alone would have been enough, but there’s plenty more story here as the Turtles together return to Mutant Town to set-up shop as protectors, mentors, and perhaps even senseis for a next generation of hero. There are some great moments among the foursome and with other characters including a nice back-and-forth between Alopex and Raph.

Usagi Yojimbo #9

Usagi Yojimbo #9 comic reviewThe two-part “Tatami” story concludes as the Neko Ninja attack the caravan carrying the ceremonial mats, destroying them and disrupting Lord Gifue’s tea ceremony with the Shogun. Despite the considerable efforts of Miyamoto Usagi and Chizu helping out to defend the mats against the ninja, the encounter ends with the mats destroyed and the villains triumphant.

We don’t often see Usagi fail when he sets his mind to a task, but although he and Chizu (and many of the soldiers guarding the mats) escape the encounter unscathed, the ninjas complete their task in undermining the upcoming ceremony between a rival lord of their employer and the Shogun.
