Secret Six #1

The first issue to kick off a new volume of Secret Six doesn’t feel much like a Secret Six comic with the focus primarily being characters not used in any previous series. Set in the aftermath of Absolute Power, the first issue really focuses on, in descending levels of importance, Jon Kent, his boyfriend Gossamer, and Dreamer who arrives to inform the pair Amanda Waller has disappeared. Looking in to where Waller should be, things get Secret Six adjacent with the trio breaking Black Alice out of prison. It’s not until the final panel, however, where the count adds up to six with the cameo appearances of Catman and Deadshot.

Green Lantern #20

Green Lantern #20 offers a couple of stories. In the main tale, we get Hal Jordan on the planet Alteon-X where Erastus the Blacksmith has been consumed with rage, rampaging across the entire planet leaving bodies in his wake. Unable to reason with the hate-fueled madman, Hal attempts to try and let the rage run its course only for it to build to a climax leaving only destruction in its wake. While not a bad little story, there’s nothing all that memorable at the one-off baddie whose anger eventually destroys him.

Red Hulk #1

Obviously attempting to take advantage of the events of Captain America: Brave New World (despite a mixed critical and fan reaction) as well as laying foundation to rebuild Doctor Doom as a major villain in the Marvel Universe leading into Avengers: Doomsday next year, Red Hulk #1 is more about IP and cross-marketing than interesting storytelling.

The Question: All Along the Watchtower #4

After last month’s reveal that Cyborg-Superman is behind the takeover of the Watchtower, The Question: All Along the Watchtower #4 deals mainly with the Question‘s guilt at not stopping him and then bringing Batwoman and Animal Man to her side, and eventually Nightshade as well, and attempting to fight back before the super-villain has an attempt to make good on his threat to employ the Watchtower’s self-destruct with the members of the Justice League aboard.
