Avengers #23

While not as fun as stealing her own suit of armor underneath Tony Stark‘s nose, the Black Cat being hired by Kang to steal some important doohickey from the Grandmaster kept in some sort of galactic casino (while outmaneuvering the Avengers) has its moments (most notably in Kang recruiting the thief and in the late reveal of Felicia’s cost for helping the villain).

SHAZAM! #20

Separate from the ongoing drama of Billy Batson and his family, SHAZAM! #20 offers a single-issue story from writer Sina Grace guest-starring Jon Kent who is accidentally de-aged back into a kid during the Captain’s fight with a djinn. I’m a big fan of single-issue stories, which at this point in time have become a lost art in comics. SHAZAM! #20 delivers a fun pairing allowing Jonathan to rediscover a bit of his youth spending time with other kids, and even visiting a certain Boy Wonder (which triggers Billy’s fandom).

Batgirl #4

The first half of Batgirl #4 deals with the fallout from the end of the last issue where Batgirl discovers just who her mother is working with. With an inclination to walk away, even if that means fighting her way out, Shiva attempts to convey the threat of the Unburied and why it is dire enough that the two of them need to work with current and former enemies such as Nyssa al Ghul and Angel Breaker who provide a bit more history of the Unburied and the war that was started with them by Ra’s al Ghul

What If…? Galactus Transformed Spider-Gwen

The latest of these What If…? Galactus one-shots each featuring Galactus turning a random member of the Marvel Universe into his new herald ask the question: What If…? Galactus Transformed Spider-Gwen. Aside from the concept being flawed, the whole point of Norrin Radd becoming the Silver Surfer was that he was a normal man beforehand. It’s the granting of almost unlimited power to a good man and then forcing him into a shitty job. If the individual is already super-powered, and you don’t deal with the crushing moral dilemmas of the job, then the concept falls apart.

Red Sonja #18

The war of wizards and gods comes to a close in Red Sonja #18 as Sonja rejoins the fight and eventually comes face-to-face with Kulan Garth. Her first attempt to kill the wizard doesn’t take, but she is able to eventually put him down to the delight of the shadow powers he had forced under his control. Those powers give Red Sonja leave to return home with the cost that no one remembers her actions or heroism in the war, which, for the She-Devil with a Sword is no price at all.
