The Superior Spider-Man #5 comic reviewThere are two stories at play in The Superior Spider-Man #5. The first involves Otto‘s date which goes surprisingly well until a late admission to his true identity. His date doesn’t take things all that well, running out of the apartment to the nearest policeman. However, things take an unusual turn from there as the policemen are revealed to be possessed by some kind of demons which are spreading across the city leading to the unlikely team-up of the Superior Spider-Man and Doctor Strange.

Doctor Strange arrival on-scene to discover Doctor Octopus dressed as Spider-Man does help get the two off to the best start, but the sorcerer soon discovers that Otto isn’t the immediate problem. Writer Christos Gage goes deep into the MCU vault to pull out Master Pandemonium as the creature responsible for the city’s ills. A living doorway to Hell, the demonic former actor is increasingly dangerous the longer he remains in New York.

Detective Comics #1002 comic reviewThe post-anniversary arc for Detective Comics centers around a new group of medieval-looking vigilantes hitting town. In the latest issue Batman squares off not only against the self-appointed Arkham Knight but his entire larping group.

With Batman getting his butt kicked all around Gotham, Damian heads out on an investigation of his own. Unfortunately, the Boy Wonder walks right into a trap left by Arkham Knight’s group who attempt to lure Damian to their way of thinking. They obviously don’t know him very well, as Damian takes the first available moment to attempt escape.

The Wild Storm #22

The Wild Storm #22 comic reviewAuthority, assemble! Jenny Mei Sparks and her friends head out to team-up with Apollo and Midnighter as The Wild Storm #22 delivers Warren Ellis’ re-imagined Authority together at last. Although Apollo and Midnighter are initially wary, you’ve got to admit that Jenny makes a pretty solid pitch as the heroes band together to stop Skywatch who decides to rain down fire on the heroes.

They may not be a cohesive team yet, but Sparks, Hawksmoor, Angela Spica, and Shen Li-Men are able to convince Midnighter and Apollo they are on the same side by their actions. And as good as her pitch was to win over the two heroes, there’s just something about seeing Jenny Mei Sparks in action to convince anyone that they don’t want to be on the other side of her wrath. Shen proves not too shabby, either.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4 comic reviewBuffy the Vampire Slayer #4 teases a major deviation to the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer continuity. One of the themes in the comic so far is Xander‘s loneliness. With Willow having a girlfriend in this version, and still burdened with his unrequited crush on a certain blonde vampire slayer, Xander is more on the outside looking in than ever. And that just happens to play into Drusilla‘s plans.

Given the stress over recent events, Giles gives Buffy the night off allowing for Buffy to spend time with her friends (and a potential new love interest in Robin). The surprise of Buffy’s night off is only matched by her terror of a date and concern for the missing Xander (who unwittingly has walked straight into Drusilla’s trap). Still, things see to be looking up for Buffy who even finds common ground with her mother’s boyfriend.
