Red Hood and the Outlaws #3

Red Hood and the Outlaws #3With both Artemis and the Superman clone now prisoners of Black Mask, the Red Hood struggles with how to proceed. Watching the deformed creature go through a similar process of rebirth as he himself survived at the hands of the Lazarus Pit, Jason can’t help but feel some empathy for Bizarro.

Other than the odd sequence where writer Scott Lobdell mucks up the origins of Bizarro to make it completely unclear whether the creature is a clone of Superman or an alternate version from a parallel Earth, the latest issue works well as it pushes the Red Hood to the precipice of having to choose between saving his acquaintances and blowing all the hard work he has done to install himself within Black Mask’s organization.

Daredevil #12

Daredevil #12Daredevil #12 continues the “Dark Art” story arc bringing the Man Without Fear face-to-face with the artistic serial killer whose name writer Charles Soule can’t decide on. Known as either Vincent van Gore or the Muse, the killer escapes Daredevil with a little sleight-of-hand forcing the hero to go searching for help to catch the killer.

Because apparently everything in Marvel Comics has to be tied to Inhumans now (thanks Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), the storyline gets a bit off-track with Daredevil going hat-in-hand to New Attilan to ask Medusa for her help in tracking down the killer. When denied their assistance (admittedly for no reason), Daredevil picks a fight with Karnak which (not surprisingly) does absolutely nothing to help his case.

Green Lanterns #8

Green Lanterns #8Losing a renegade Guardian of the Universe on Halloween night he has in his possession a power ring anyone is capable enough to command isn’t the best way to start the holiday for Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. And if that wasn’t enough, Earth’s two rookie Green Lanterns aren’t the only ones on the lookout for Guardian Rami and the Phantom Ring.

Green Lanterns #8 is a fun Halloween-themed issue featuring Simon’s family, trick-or-treaters, and a pair of Dominators on Earth in hopes to get their hands on the Phantom Ring. Dominators aren’t my favorite alien threat, but they actually turn out to be just the kind of creepy-looking pair of villains for a proper Halloween comic.

Jessica Jones #1

Jessica Jones #1Given the popularity of the Netflix series it’s no big surprise that Marvel Comics has chosen to re-ream writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos whose Alias comic series provided the foundation for Netflix’s Jessica Jones. I’ve lost track of the character in recent years, so I was a bit surprised by the comic’s opening in which Jessica is released from maximum security prison without much detail of what she was incarcerated for or what earned her an early release.

Ready to get back to business and reopen Alias Investigations, Jessica’s attempts to find a client are interrupted by the repeated arrivals of Luke Cage‘s friends each offering pointed questions to Jessica about where her child is. Undeterred from questioning by both Misty Knight and Spider-Woman, Jessica keeps this secret to herself.

Green Arrow #8

Green Arrow #8Green Arrow may be trapped on an island in the middle of the nowhere (again), but at least this time he isn’t alone. Green Arrow #8 begins a new story arc with Ollie, Dinah, and Diggle on a deserted island (which it turns out isn’t exactly deserted).

While Diggle is taken prisoner by a mechanical bear and dragged to underground lair, Ollie and Dinah reconnect and, thanks to their picturesque surroundings, are given the opportunity to have the kind of vacation neither hero would ever likely agree to. As to just who, and what, are on the island with them, we’ll have to await and see as “Island of Scars” plays out. Now that our heroes are back together, and have finished their brief respite, it’s time to get back to work.
