The Shadow: Year One #6

The Shadow: Year One #6The early days of Lamont Cranston and Margo Lane‘s relationship continues as The Shadow hits the streets looking for answers about the oppressive force he feels lurking behind the gang war and Margo, in an attempt to prove her use to her scary new friend, decides to help the vigilante find missing crime boss Big Gun Massaretti who once tried to have the former lady of the evening thrown off a rooftop.

I’m very surprised that six issue into the eight-issue mini-series our hero is still largely blind to his true adversary. Given that only two issues remain I’m guessing the eventual confrontation between the two may be relatively short given that our hero has yet to even learn his name.

Issue #6 plays on a common damsel in distress theme as Margo takes a foolish chance that puts her in danger with The Shadow nowhere in sight. Since we know Ms. Lane isn’t destined to die, I’d expect The Shadow to make a miraculous save before returning to hunt down his true enemy. Worth a look.

Green Hornet #7

Green Hornet #7Reunited with Kato, the Green Hornet makes a discovery that the wealthy industrialists behind The Voice weren’t working alone as the Hornet finds a way to keep his cover and save the life of a FBI agent while uncovering the fact that the group are receiving orders from a mysterious voice on the other end of the radio. The real villain? Nazis!

As the Hornet gets back to business as usual, big changes are in store for Britt Reid who opens his new radio station and woos Lenore Case away from The Sentinel into joining him not only in that venture but his late night activities with Kato as well.

Personally I’m hoping the radio adventure is short-lived as there’s just something about the character that fits the mold of a newspaper man and the series, in the early issues, have used The Sentinel well by establishing it as another character. Case being introduced to her boss’ secrets begins to widen the network the vigilante can rely on while also laying the groundwork of possible romance down the line. Worth a look.

Amazing X-Men #1

Amazing X-Men #1Years ago Marvel Comics had a simple rule: characters killed in the Marvel Universe stayed dead. This idea, which forced deaths to both be rare and mean something, has long since been abandoned. Although I’m in favor of the old way of doing things, the current need to kill a major character every couple of years makes it hard to stick to those old rules. Thankfully for the X-Men (who have an insane history of defying death – just look at Jean Grey) the rule is no longer enforced allowing the return of a character who should never have been killed.

Amazing X-Men #1 begins on the edge of Heaven where Nightcrawler remains unwilling to fully embrace the paradise that has been rewarded to him since his death. When a a group of Dankeschön show up to storm Heaven followed by a pack of Bamfs and Azazel, the mutant is jilted out of his melancholy and into action.

On Earth the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, and its newest teacher Firestar, faces its own problems as the Beast discovers an infestation of Bamfs who have cobbled together some kind of transporter inside the schools walls.

Legends of Red Sonja #1

Legends of Red Sonja #1The first issue of the 40th Anniversary four-issue mini-series isn’t quite what I expected. Happily, it’s more. Written and drawn by “the biggest female stars in the worlds of prose, television, gaming and comics” the first issue isn’t a collection of separate tales as usually befits this type of anthology. Instead it is a single story where various other tales are woven into the tale in flashbacks and re-tellings of the adventures of Red Sonja who is pursued by a group of mercenaries and killers known as the Grey Riders.

Legends of Red Sonja #1 introduces the Grey Riders in the main tale by Gail Simone while also offering use separate tales by other artists and writers of past adventures of the She-Devil with a Sword involving her thieving, fighting both a werewolf and giant squid, and defying the gods.

Although it lacks a view of the character herself, this collection of stories is more than enough to sell me on the series and make me to look forward to what the next group of artists and writers have in store. Worth a look.

Daredevil: Dark Nights #6

Daredevil: Dark Nights #6The mini-series final arc begins here as Matt Murdock heads down to Miami with a witness and agents of the FBI to protect the lawyer’s latest client, a dishwasher unfortunate to witness a drug dealer stab a man to death in a back alley.

Murdock gets a couple of surprises while enjoying the lush surroundings. The first, running into Misty Knight at the hotel pool, is rather pleasant. The second, having his witness be abducted and seeing the man’s FBI protector gunned-down in front of him, isn’t as much fun. Together Daredevil and Misty night search for the missing witness who both fear is already dead, a search which will lead them to take on the kingpin of Cuba as the story continues.

I always enjoy Daredevil’s various flirtations with a host of female and criminals who can’t get enough of Daredevil (seriously, blind lawyer is like catnip for the super-hero/villain set). The sexual tension between the pair is obvious, and entertaining, as is the art by Thony Silas. Worth a look.
