Nova #8

Nova #8An Infinity tie-in issue, Nova #8 focuses on Sam Alexander still trying to get a handle on his powers as the new Nova and being approached by Speedball and Vance Astrovik (the less interesting version of Vance Astro) about joining their new team. After turning down the Avengers, Sam isn’t all too keen on hitching up with a teen group although the pair’s experience of working with a previous Nova does pique his interest.

The issue also sets up next month’s one-on-one between Nova and Thanos‘ new pet Kalendra (slave assassin of Thanos’ lieutenant Promima Midnight) who the Mad Titan has sent after the new Nova to help quell his bad experiences with the old one.

Although the issue is an Infinity tie-in, I was able to follow the story easily without having to pick up Marvel’s latest event comic. Nova #8 continues the mix of action and humor that served the title well, but Kalendra is going to have to do more to impress me than what we get here if she’s going to be a major threat to Nova next month. Worth a look.

G.I. JOE: Special Missions #7

G.I. JOE: Special Missions #7The latest issue of G.I. JOE: Special Missions finds Zartan in on the run in the middle of the Australian Outback from both the JOEs and the Dreadnoks, who he abandons to pursue his mad dream of using the genetic information on the MARS device to populate the planet with an infinite number of Zartan clones.

With action both back at the Dreadnok base and in the various pursuits, as the JOES and Dreadnoks fight amongst themselves for who will get to Zartan first, G.I. JOE: Special Missions #7 is filled with a good amount of action and is available with a Torch variant cover (c’mon, you know you want one).

Zartan’s mad plans are (thankfully) short-lived and we won’t have to suffer through a battle of clones. But his abandonment of the Dreadnoks also suggests that might not be seeing them again going forward (and least not under his command). I’ve got to admit, this makes me a little sad. For fans.

Fatale #17

Fatale #17Split into two-halves, the latest issue gets us caught up on Nicolas Lash‘s run from the law with his murderous new protector Nelson whose crazy antics and secrets have Lash wondering whose side the man is really on.

The second-half of the issue continues the amnesiac Josephine‘s stay with the rock band who begin showing strain based on her presence including taking unnecessary risks and sole male member of the band who has not shared her bed to demand his turn. Although Josephine’s memory may not have returned, by the end of the issue she will realize just how much power over men, and their life and death, she possesses.

Writer Ed Brubaker continues to gather the storm clouds as well as Josephine’s unsheilded presence comes to the attention of not one but two separate enemies both obsessed with finding her. A really strong issue with great use of foreboding and more top notch art from Sean Phillips. Worth a look.

Guardians of the Galaxy #6

Guardians of the Galaxy #6As Star-Lord seeks some answers from Thanos about what the hell is happening with Earth, Iron Man (dressed in Quill’s old, and far superior, armor) and the rest of the Guardians try to help Gammora who has bitten off more than she can chew with the mysterious Angela.

Two issues in, both of which feature Angela on the cover, we’re still no closer to discovering who exactly this character is or how powerful this version of Neil Gaiman‘s Spawn character might be within the confines of the Marvel Universe. Obviously she can stand up to Gamora, but it an issue where Star-Lord survives and off-panel one-on-one fight with Thanos that’s not all that impressive.

The inclusion of The Watcher, who seems legitimately dismayed at the arrival of Angela, helps lend some weight to a character who really has done much of anything so far. In much the same way, Quill’s opening scene with Thanos sets the stage for just how much danger the Earth now finds itself. Worth a look.

Powerpuff Girls #1

Powerpuff Girls #1The Powerpuff Girls get new life in the first issue of IDW’s new six-issue mini-series. Powerpuff Girls #1 features Townsville’s pint-sized heroes (Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup) saving the day from both Mojo Jojo‘s latest attack and a swamp monster causing havoc on the city’s golf course.

Fans of the show should enjoy themselves here, although I will note writer/artist Troy Little does have trouble getting Mojo Jojo speech right as it’s much more straightforward in the comic than the more byzantine and circular restating of facts fans of the character have come to know and love.

The issue comes with an amazing array of variant covers (several only available from select vendors) and sets up what will apparently be the mini-series’ big plot development as an incarcerated Mojo Jojo, tired loosing to the Powerpuff Girls, decides his big brain has been nothing but trouble and reaches out to the one man who might be able turn him back into a happy monkey – Professor Utonium. Say it ain’t so, Mojo! Worth a look.
