Morning Glories #22

morning-glories-22-coverSurprisingly the latest issue of Morning Glories doesn’t jump to the storylines of other characters this month (as has been the series’ formula), instead we pick up from last month’s issue as Hunter, Jun (really Hisao) and the new kids attempt to stop an all important sacrifice. At least I think that’s what they are doing because, not surprising at all, the comic gives us scant information or true motivations on what is really happening.

The comic jumps around a bit from the current situation to flashbacks from the Morning Glories Academy two years ago. In the flashbacks we see another student who has had their “eyes opened” as Jade did a few issues back. The current storyline also reinstates the idea that for students at the academy time and space aren’t really an issue as Hunter and his new friends find themselves using Sumerian ruins to travel through time to save Abraham.

We get a tease that we’ll learn what Hunter is actually good at in this issue, but other than an ability to get shot we don’t really get an idea what his special gift might be. For fans.

Batman #13

batman-new-52-13-coverBatman #13 marks the return of the Joker and the beginning of a the new crossover “The Death of the Family.” After missing for a year the Joker returns in style attacking Police Headquarters, retrieving his face and beginning a new murder spree that reenacts his first appearance in Gotham City years ago.

Although Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo keep the Joker mainly to the shadows here, their version of him, the brilliant psychopath with an odd attachment to Batman and a need to create chaos, works quite well. I’m still not a fan of the whole face off idea. One could argue having the face re-stapled to his skull makes the Joker more creepy, but I think it just makes him look like a B-movie horror villain.

I also enjoyed the discussion among the Bat-Family as Batman warns them the Joker has returned but takes it solely on himself to catch him. I’m surprised we don’t get a an appearance from Red Hood (given his history with the madman) but the next four months will give us tie-ins to all the Bat-books including Catwoman, Teen Titans, and Red Hood and the Outlaws.

G.I. JOE #18

gijoe-18-coverThe war between Cobra and the ninja clan Arashikage heats up as the Joes discover their former teammate Snake Eyes is alive and leading his former clan in a bloody war against Cobra.

This issue kicks off the new G.I. JOE / Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow crossover pitting the most famous Joe against not only Cobra but his friends as well. Realizing how dangerous Snake Eyes could become if he ever turned the clan’s attention to the Joes, Scarlett gathers the troops to take on one of their own.

There’s a heated discussion among the Joes over the logic of attempting to fight someone like Snake Eyes who always has his own hidden agenda and may be playing both Cobra and Arashikage against each other for the world’s benefit.

We also get Serpentor‘s growing frustration with his attempts to bloody the Arashikage and break the Soft Master and tons of action including Snake Eyes leading a bloody attack on Vendri Corporate Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. Worth a look.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, Josephine begins a relationship with B-movie star Miles against her better judgement and waits for the other shoe to drop now the cult knows she’s alive and where to find her as Mr. Bishop prepares to take his revenge.
