The Lone Ranger #10

Tonto returns home after killing all but one of the soldiers who attacked his people and killed his wife as the “Native Ground” storyline continues.

With so much blood on his hands, even bathing in the nearby river can’t get the Native American warrior clean. Realizing the man he left alive will tell others of his actions and put his tribe at risk, Tonto decides he must leave the tribe and give the white man another target to chase, and fear.

Back in the present, the Lone Ranger finally reaches the elders of the Ute tribe only to be told their is nothing to be done for his fallen friend. We know Tonto isn’t going to die, but it seems the Ranger will have his hands full to convince the tribe to help him as the story concludes over the next two issues.

Although the story arc has filled in quite a bit of backstory, we’re now four issues in and no closer to learning the events that brought Tonto and the Lone Ranger together. I’m hoping that part of the story will be told by the Ranger in his quest to get his companion the help he needs to survive. For fans.

Worlds’ Finest #5

worlds-finest-5-coverIt’s odd that Worlds’ Finest keeps running away from its biggest strength – the relationship between its two leading ladies. Although we get some nice moments with Power Girl and Huntress together, most of this issue is set aside to give us separate adventures for them both.

From Power Girl we get another story of her trying to find a way home for both Helena and herself. This one involves a super-accelerator and a robot from another dimension. And the comic continues the trend for Power Girl to lose most of her clothing for another issue. For Helena, we get an evening out at a Take Back the Night rally where the Huntress is called upon to stop a sniper from… doing something (the comic makes no attempt to give us a reason for the man’s actions).

Although neither story is bad, all of the best parts of Worlds’ Finest #5 come in the conversations between the two women between their stories and at the comic’s beginning as the heroes continue to test Kara’s powers to see how they might work differently in their new home. For fans.

Fairest #8

fairest-8-coverI thoroughly enjoyed last month’s issue of Fables starring film noir versions of Beauty and the Beast, so I was a little sad to see the series move on to a new arc so soon. That said, I can say the first issue of this new Rapunzel storyline by Lauren Beukes and artist Inaki Miranda is worth picking up.

Rapunzel receives a deadly message in Japanese delivered by flying paper cranes that confirms, as she always believed, tha her lost children are still alive. Unable to convince Snow White or Bigby, Rapunzel has no choice but to set out on her Jack Horner and here barber Joel Crow (that hair isn’t going to cut itself) to see where the mystery will lead.

The fact that she’s even willing to go to Frau Totenkinder, the witch who stole her for her golden hair and raised her as her own, only proves how desperate and determined Rapunzel is to find her missing children. Fairest #8 does a great job at introducing the cast of characters for this new arc and laying down the quest, and lengths Rapunzel will go to fulfill it. Best of the week.

Super Dinosaur #14

The “Inner Earth” story arc continues as Derek and his kidnapper, the Exile, try to stay one-step ahead of the soldiers who want them both dead on orders by the Exile’s brother. After making their escape from the palace Derek meets the rest of the resistance, other Reptiloids that believe life could exist on the face of the planet. With one side wanting him dead (as his very existence is sacrilege) and the other wanting to invade the surface of the planet, Derek is stuck in the middle. Thankfully, for him, he’s a clever kid.

We also get more of Derek’s rescue team (Super Dinosaur, Elliot, Erika and Erin) braving the various dinosaurs and creatures while searching for their missing friend, and Super Dinosaur comes to the sad conclusion that the truth of Inner Earth is far less glamorous than his dreams.

The issue keeps the story moving forward, although with the time split between the groups we don’t get as far down the road as I’d like. Still, there are plenty of action scenes for both Derek and his friends and some humorous moments, such as Derek introducing himself to the non-believers. Worth a look.
