DuckTales #5

ducktales-5-coverThe last four issues of Darkwing Duck‘s adventures in Boom Studio’s comics begin here with part one of the four-part crossover between Darkwing Duck and DuckTales. Realizing something is amiss in St. Canard, Scrooge McDuck and his three nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, travel to find out what fate has befallen Scrooge’s former accountant Fenton Crackshell (the one-time super-hero known as Gizmoduck).

Locating Crackshell proves to be easy, dealing with a city gone mad thanks to the Legion of Eve-il is going to be far more tricky. Magica, the Phantom Blot, and Ammonia Pine have banded together and are magically altering the city into a the stuff of nightmares. Never fear, for Darkwing Duck is on the case!

The story is co-written by Warren Spector and Ian Brill and the art is also divided between Jose Massaroli and James Silvani. For having that many cooks in the kitchen it turns out quite well. I’d rather have a solo Darkwing adventure, but seeing as his days are numbered I’ll take all that I can get. Worth a look.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Nine #2

buffy-season-nine-2-coverThe Ninth Season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer continues right where the first issue left off (although sadly without the writing of Buffy creator Joss Whedon). Buffy and her pals run into a demon in an alley that’s not after dinner, destruction, or mayhem. This one wants money, specifically Buffy’s college loan.

It seems in a world without magic all sorts of demons have been trapped in our reality and forced into finding odd jobs to make do. This demon has become a debt collector, and from his frightening visage I’m guessing a pretty good one.

Buffy also has to deal with being hauled in by the police who catch her in the act of staking a vampire. The cops are at a loss as to what to charge her with, but are sure she’s guilty of something, but the truth is what they are after is a mysterious young man who is miraculously bringing the undead back to death (so to speak).

Writer Andrew Chambliss does a fair job in picking up for Whedon but the dialogue and character reactions simply aren’t as crisp this time around. It’s still worth reading, but not quite as good as I was hoping. Worth a look.

[Dark Horse, $2.99]

Batman and Robin #2

batman-and-robin-new-52-2-coverThe second issue continues to focus on the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Damian, but (like most of the New 52 titles) it is a step up from the first issue. We see Batman’s concern over his son’s past and the violence within him but also a proud moment where he sees Damian able to control his fury in taking down some gun-toting thugs on the streets of Gotham.

The issue also continues to give us a little more insight into the deadly vigilante known as NoBody who appears to be someone from Bruce Wayne’s past. I do have some concerns with the first villain out of the gate being someone who knows Bruce Wayne is Batman, but that’s second to my concern over the casual mention of Ducard.

For those who don’t remember, Ducard was the character played Liam Neeson in Batman Begins (before he was shown to be Ra’s al Ghul in one of the most disappointing reveals ever). Although I understand the reasoning for bringing in a character fans of the movie will recognize, I’m very concerned how much this might effect Bruce Wayne’s early history in this new DCU.

Casanova: Avarita #2

casanova-avarita-2-coverI’ve never read Matt Fraction’s Cassanova series, but I was intrigued by the cover of issue #2 of Casanova: Avarita, liked what I saw in flipping through pages (including some great art by Gabriel Bà), and since my local comic shop still had a copy of issue #1 I decided to pick them both up. I’m glad I did.

The premise is a little difficult to explain, so bear with me. Casanova Quinn is a former thief who was thrown into a parallel reality and has become an agent of a cross-dimensional spy organization known as E.M.P.I.R.E. (run by his father). His mission is to clean up the mess his displacement has caused by cauterizing timelines by causing spatiotemporal holocausts. Got all that?

In the latest series Casanova has learned the real name of the arch-villain Newman Xeno who put him in this predicament. Armed with that knowledge Cassanova has been jumping realities killing as many versions of Luther Desmond Diamond as he can find. And then a funny thing happens, Casanova decides he kind of likes Diamond and doesn’t want to go on killing him.
