Justice League International #2

jli-new-52-2-coverThe new Justice League International gets their first big test when a giant robot rises out of the ground in Peru and leaving destruction in its wake. Let’s just say things could have gone better.

The team, ill-equipped for the situation, having no experience together functioning as a team, and with no intel on the threat, quickly gets their butts handed to them. They can’t even agree at making a necessary hasty retreat to regroup. And that’s before they learn the robot has some buddies.

A solid second issue from writer Dan Jurgens. I’d still like it to be a little more fun but we do get a couple of fun moments include Andre Briggs‘ attempt to throw Batman off the team and Booster Gold getting some unexpected support in his early days as leader of the team.

It’s an improvement from the first issue, but the comic is still missing a little of the fun from Justice League: Generation Lost. If Booster is going to be the more serious version we’re seeing here I think the book needs a little more youthful energy which someone like Blue Beetle could provide. Worth a look.

Moon Knight #6

moon-knight-6-coverThe latest issue of Moon Knight may be the best yet. Echo and Moon Knight sit down to talk after their blowup (you know, when he kissed her and she punched him in the face repeatedly). The pair admit, but do not give into, their attraction to each other, and Brian Michael Bendis makes a ingenious observation about the similarities of the two heroes.

This issue also sees the final fate of the Night Shift. The Los Angeles Kingpin (who is finally revealed in this issue) doesn’t take kindly to failure. The choice of Count Nefaria is an interesting one (to be honest, I’d forgotten he even existed) as it gives Moon Knight an adversary powerful enough to be a threat but C-List enough not to overpower the book.

My favorite part of this issue, however, is when the Avengers (the ones Moon Knight has been hallucinating about for weeks) actually show up to have a talk with him. This provides the week’s best panel as Spidey has a question for Moon Knight about his latest tactics. Best of the week.

Huntress #1

the-huntress-1-coverAlthough no longer a member of the Birds of Prey, and not part of the initial month of the DC Reboot, the Huntress finally makes an appearance her in the first issue of this six-issue mini-series.

Helena travels to Italy to take down a human smuggling and prostitution ring. Although the issue doesn’t feature a super-villain there are plenty of ass-kicking action panels of the Huntress taking down nameless thugs.

There are two interesting points to note. The first is the Huntress seems more reserved in this new reboot. She’s using far more trick arrows than we’ve seen before and makes concious effort not to draw blood with her crossbow.

The other interesting note is the fact that Helena’s last name is never uttered (other than the cover name she offers for her hotel room). With the recent announcement that Earth-2 will exist in the new DCU that means there’s a chance (although a slight one) that this Huntress is Helena Wayne instead of Helena Bertinelli. How much interesting would the New 52 be with the daughter of Batman and Catwoman running around?

Stormwatch #2

stormwatch-2-coverMy biggest complaint with the first issue of the series was the terribly rushed art by Miguel Angel Sepulveda. The art of the second issue is a definite improvement and the series introduces more members of the team (including their leader Adam One) and further explains the role of Stormwatch in the DC Universe.

Once the Martian Manhunter has calmed down Apollo and Midnigther the team starts to look into the problem of the moon where The Eminence of Blades has come across a hostile alien lifeform.

To keep the Justice League from getting in their way of actually solving the problem, Stormwatch uses the powers of the Projectionist and the Martian Manhunter to suggest a random supervillain is responsible for the moon’s attack of the Earth leaving the team to settle matters quietly on their own. It’s actually a hilarious idea, even if it is a low-blow to the JLA.

The second issue works well (even with the unsubtle entendres between Apollo and Midnighter). Worth a look.
