Firefox movie reviewBased on the novel Craig Thomas, and set during the Cold War, 1982’s Firefox stars Clint Eastwood as a former Air Force pilot tasked with an impossible mission to steal a prototype aircraft in Bilyarsk. Despite his post-traumatic stress, Mitchell Gant (Eastwood) is chosen for his unique qualifications: his piloting ability, his similar size to the Russian pilot (Kai Wulff) the Firefox is designed for, and his ability to speak and think in Russian (as the plane’s weapon systems are controlled by thought).

Sent to Moscow undercover as a heroin dealer, who needs to be shadowed by the KGB initially for the cover to hold, it becomes obvious to Gant fairly early in his adventure that he is in far over his head long before he makes it to the secret base where the Firefox is kept. Half Cold War spy film and half action-thriller, Firefox holds up pretty well 35 years later as Gant’s journey keeps him one-step ahead of the KGB thanks to a group of Jewish dissidents and sympathizers that will give their lives to get Gant to the plane and allow him to do the rest.

Silverado movie review

Today’s throwback Thursday post takes us on the road to Silverado. Lawrence Kasdan‘s post-modern western about four strangers (Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner, and Danny Glover) coming together to fight injustice in a western town ruled over by corrupt sheriff (Brian Dennehy) and greedy landowner (Ray Baker) is as entertaining today as when it was released in theaters 32 years ago.

Shot on location New Mexico by cinematographer John Bailey and set to the Academy Award nominated score by Bruce Broughton, Silverado is a love letter to the classic western focusing on themes of frontier justice, hard choices, and standing up for what’s right. Each of the four characters is given their own arc as Paden (Kline) finds his loyalties tested, Emmett (Glenn) and Mal (Glover) both stand up for family, and Jake (Costner) fights his own impulsive nature. The film is peppered with entertaining supporting roles from the likes of John Cleese, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Hunt, Jeff Goldblum, Lynn Whitfield, Amanda Wyss, and Jeff Fahey as the menacing Tyree.

The Flash - The Complete Third Season Blu-ray reviewWhile the Third Season of The Flash feels a bit too familiar with the introduction of yet another evil speedster, the show does provide several memorable moments including a dark turn for Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker), the death of a major character, a musical crossover episode featuring Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), and the shake-up of The Flash’s world following his Flashpoint adventure. There are a few clunkers here, but when it’s good The Flash can be awfully good.

Other highlights include a fun Christmas episode, characters dealing with the complexity of what Savitar is, a trip into the future, the season finale, meta-humans altered by Doctor Alchemy to match characters from the Flashpoint reality, Jesse Quick racing into action, the Invasion crossover, the two-part return of Grodd, the introduction of Gypsy (Jessica Camacho), and the first appearance of a classic Flash villain.

Elementary - The Complete Fifth Season DVD review

Hoping to artificially instill some continuity to the show’s Fifth Season, the first episode of the year introduces us to Joan‘s (Lucy Liu) former patient and reformed gangbanger Shinwell (Nelsan Ellis). Shinwell’s issues will be a recurring theme throughout the year as Sherlock‘s (Jonny Lee Miller) attempts to help the man infiltrate and bring down a local gang have consequences for everyone involved. Sherlock’s odd behavior, getting even odder towards the end of the year, will culminate in his conversations with a stranger (Joanna Christie) and larger implications for his partnership with Watson heading into Season Six.

While far from the show’s strongest season, highlights include the death of a magician, murder and pirate gold, the return of Kitty (Ophelia Lovibond), a desperate client, Holmes struggling with attending his AA meetings, and the murder of a mathematician.
