There’s an interesting 20-minute short film buried in writer/director Brian Frank Visciglia‘s 2017 thriller Ryde. However, at 84 minutes, a serial killer (David Wachs) taking over a ride-share driver’s car to find victims gets stuck in attempts to elongate the story with our killer’s separate vignettes and lengthen the not-all-that-interesting dialogue between our other main character (Jessica Serfaty Michel) and her loser boyfriend (Ronnie Alvarez).

The bizarrely-named Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, suggesting the film is part of franchise that doesn’t exist, is a slight deviation from the usual Jason Statham-versus-the-world stories. In what appears to be a half-assed Mission: Impossible knockoff, Statham stars as the Ethan Hunt of the film charged with getting back a stolen weapon about to be sold on the black market. His team includes Aubrey Plaza, doing double duty as the female field agent and tech support, and Bugzy Malone in a role best described as “the other guy.”

Originally a completely separate throwaway slasher flick, it’s unclear whether anyone involved in this project, including director Morgan J. Freeman or screenwriters Alex Sanger and Karen Craig, ever watched American Psycho or read the book it was adapted from. Mila Kunis, who didn’t know Lions Gate planned to connect this story to American Psycho (let alone call it a sequel), would publicly apologize for the film and beg others to let the franchise die.

Victoria Abril stars as a former porn actress attempting to transition to mainstream films in the final project of the smitten renown director Máximo Espejo (Francisco Rabal) whose lust for the actress is the worst kept secret on set. Our other main character is recently-released mental patient Ricky (Antonio Banderas) obsessed with Marina who kidnaps the actress in hopes of making her fall in love with him. Keeping her bound to the bed, Ricky takes no physical advantage while also attending to her needs including procuring drugs to help with her toothache. However, there is no debate that she is his prisoner.
