I don’t know that I’ve ever watched a more beautiful but empty film than Nicolas Winding Refn‘s 2013 thriller Only God Forgives which throughout every immaculately staged shot and beautifully lit scene feels like marionettes dragged around the screen by a director who refuses to let his actors, or their characters, have any agency of their own.

1968’s The 7th Voyage of Sinbad is a fantasy epic starring Kerwin Mathews in the title role of the ship captain, and heir of Bagdad, who is tricked by the sorcerer Sokurah (Torin Thatcher) to return to a cursed island with a Cyclops after the wizard shrinks Sinbad‘s love Princess Parisa (Kathryn Grant) and suggests the only cure can be found there. What Sokurah is really after, however, is a magic lamp and the power of its genie (Richard Eyer).

I don’t know if writer/director Rudy Mancuso‘s 2024 coming of age romance ever fully lives up to its potential, getting lost in the latter half in an unconvincing love triangle and deciding puppets rather than music is the core to our quirky leading man, but it’s undeniable that at its best moments Música soars.

Of all the classic Universal monsters, the Gill-man, also known simply as the Creature, was always my favorite. The plot of Creature from the Black Lagoon is pretty boilerplate with a group of scientists heading up the Amazon River looking the remainder of a fossilized skeleton of a fish man. Little do they know one of these creatures still exists. The setup works so well it would be copied by any number of horror movies for decades to come.
