Set in the middle of a bad neighborhood in Detroit, two people (Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård) separately double-book an Airbnb. Despite some initial reservations, the strangers attempt to make the most of it, although the house’s dark secrets will make them both wish they had left when they had the chance.
Writer/director Zach Cregger offers a great setup here playing on the idea of an Airbnb from hell where Tess (Campbell) discovers a series of dark tunnels under the house leading to unexpected horror. Our other main character for the film to fuck with is the house’s owner (Justin Long) who shows up at the property desperately needing to sell it only to discover the evil lurking below the surface as well.
While ultimately I think we learn a bit too much, as the unknown is far creepier than even the pretty messed up shit our visitors run into in the tunnels below the house, Barbarian still hits its mark while also potentially giving pause to those considering their next Airbnb purchase. The new 4K steelbook includes a short promotional featurette, deleted scenes, and audio commentary by Cregger and producer Roy Lee.
