We now have our first look at the sequel to RED. Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich return (but Karl Urban, Morgan Freeman, and Rebecca Pidgeon do not). The sequel also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Anthony Hopkins, David Thewlis, Byung-hun Lee, and Neal McDonough. RED 2 opens in theaters on August 2nd.
The latest from director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, Sunshine) stars James McAvoy as an art thief suffering from amnesia and Vincent Cassel as the art auctioneer so desperate to recover a recently stolen painting he enlists the help of a hypnotherapist (Rosario Dawson). Danny Sapani, Tuppence Middleton, and Ben Cura also star. Trance opens in the UK on March 27th but as yet still has no U.S. release date.
The list of the nominees for the 85th Academy Awards was released this morning. Lincoln leads all films with 12 nominations (including Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Adapted Screenplay). Beasts of the Southern Wild got more love than I was expecting with four nominations (including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Quvenzhané Wallis). The biggest snubs include Kathryn Bigelow failing to earn a nomination for Best Director, Anna Karenina falling to earn any nomination outside of the production and technical categories, and The Master not earning a single nomination outside the acting categories. The Place Beyond the Pines reunites Ryan Gosling with Blue Valentine writer/director Derek Cianfrance as Gosling stars as a motorcycle stunt driver turned bank robber. Bradley Cooper, Rose Byrne, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Dane DeHaan, and Bruce Greenwood also star. The film opens in limited release in select cities on March 29th.
When the world is attacked by giant monsters from deep in the ocean only one thing can stop them – giant human-controlled robots! Directed by Guillermo del Toro, Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Max Martini, Clifton Collins Jr., and Robert Kazinsky also star. The film opens in theaters on July 12th.
