Sherlock Holmes – Death in the North Sea

Sherlock Saturday takes us back to 40s radio and murder. Premiering on June 16, 1947 as part of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio program, Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) is hired by Edith Fairmont in a predicament involving the death of her husband with all evidence pointing to the man’s partner, who is also Edith’s lover, found in the locked room with the body. Aspects of the episode  involving the motive and method of murder would be reimagined 65 years later for an episode of Elementary – “You Do it Yourself.”

The Adventures of Superman – Keno’s Landslide

Superman Sunday takes us back to 1940 and Clark Kent preventing an agent of the Wolf from crippling the railroad not by super-heroics in stopping the train or the landslide the blast causes but by simply pulling the emergency cord on-board the train to the confusion and bewilderment of the those aboard. Superman then clears the tracks and allows the train to continue its journey which will put a certain reporter in the Wolf’s crosshairs.

The Strange Case of the Demon Barber

Sherlock Sunday takes us back to 40s radio and murder. Premiering on January 28, 1946 as part of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio program, Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) is put in the unlikely situation of being hired by a potential murderer to prove his guilt. Inspired by Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the actor playing the lead role in the musical is being gaslit to believe he has committed murders at night. Quickly dismissing the “evidence” of nightly crimes, Holmes is not quick enough to save his client’s life, but the world’s greatest detective does bring the killer to justice by taking the victim’s place upon the stage.
