Avatar - The Boy in the Iceberg / The Avatar Returns

Wayback Wednesday takes us back to the world of elemental benders and a 12 year-old boy destined to return balance to the Four Nations. The opening two episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender introduce us to the Southern Water Tribe‘s Katara (Mae Whitman) and her jerky brother Sokka (Jack De Sena) who discover a young Air Bender frozen in an iceberg. Having never seen an Air Bender before, believing them to have been wiped out, they are shocked but even more so when they discover Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) has been frozen in ice for 100 years and is the missing Avatar destined to bring balance back to the realm dominated by the war mongering Fire Nation.

Obliterated - Real American Heroes

The first episode of Obliterated tells us everything to know about the characters and the series which apparently both have the same stunted level of intelligence. Our main characters are a cobbled together special ops team run by CIA Agent Ava Winters (Shelley Hennig). If your wondering how the show gets around the CIA running domestic ops… well, it basically just ignores the fact that they are a foreign intelligence service and is barred from anything remotely like what Obliterated gives us (or even a halfway rational version of events depicted). Could Obliterated be dumb fun? Possibly, although there’s certainly more dumb than fun in this first episode.

Bob's Burgers - Fraud of the Dead: Zombie-docu-pocalypse

“Fraud of the Dead: Zombie-docu-pocalypse” gives us a mocumentary within a found footage horror movie made by the Belcher kids, their parents, and several of their friends. What starts out as Gene (Eugene Mirman) and Tina (Dan Mintz) creating a documentary about how good an archer Louise (Kristen Schaal) has become soon becomes hijacked when zombies attack the restaurant. It’s a completely unexpected episode that shows off the love and support of family and community behind the zombie craziness, and everything works here (even the unnecessary character assassination of mustard).

NCIS: Sydney - Brothers in Arms

When a shark upchucks the arm of a retired Navy SEAL still wearing his Navy dive computer (with the GPS disabled), NCIS looks into what the diver was doing out alone and what happened to the rest of him. The sailor’s body eventually washes up but the drone Blue (Mavournee Hazel) discovered evidence of remains missing. A little raid of the dive shop where the victim worked by DeShawn (Sean Sagar) and Evie (Tuuli Narkle) leads to a discovery of smuggled drugs and definite motive for murder, but despite the suspects’ willingness to confess JD (Todd Lasance) believes something more is going on.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters - Parallels and Interiors

“Parallels and Interiors” concludes the two-parter arc of Cate (Anna Sawai), Kentaro (Ren Watabe), and May (Kiersey Clemons) following Lee (Kurt Russell) to Alaska looking for answers about their father’s disappearance and presumed death. The episode is mostly about survival as the quartet fractures with Kentaro separating from the rest and looking for a structure he saw in the opposite direction the others plan to go.
