Doctor Who - The Star Beast

The first of three holiday specials designed to wash the unpleasant taste of recent Who history out of mouths of fans by returning to a simpler time gives us The Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) together once again when another alien experience coincidentally close to Donna brings about their reunion. “The Star Beast” is forced to deal with the problem of putting the pair together (which should kill Donna), but awkwardly gets around the fact by not having any of the alien space events, characters, or the actions of The Doctor himself trigger Donna in any way (a pretty strong contradiction to events in “The End of Time“) until the script is ready to deal with the ramifications (in a way that makes the previous Doctor look incredibly stupid for not suggesting somethin similar years ago).

The Bad Guys - A Very Bad Holiday

Set prior to the events of The Bad Guys, with the thieves still working on the wrong side of the law, The Bad Guys – A Very Bad Holiday gives us the anthropomorphic villains scrambling to save Christmas (and their planned big holiday heist) after their actions unintentionally ruin the holiday for the entire town. Trying to do the right thing for the wrong reason, and sucking at it, provides the crux of the holiday special that fans of the original movie may enjoy (although it’s not one of the more memorable animated holiday specials).

A Murder at the End of the World - Survivors

For a collection of supposed geniuses, these people sure are stupid. Despite having pretty solid evidence to support her claim that Bill (Harris Dickinson) was murdered, Darby (Emma Corrin) finds herself alone in the camp while others are all too willing to accept an unlikely suicide. About to be sent home by Andy (Clive Owen), Darby pushes forward finding an unexpected connection Bill had with another of the guests who will meet a similar end by the end of the episode, just before he can share a crucial piece of information, forcing, hopefully, our “geniuses” to take Darby’s claims a bit more seriously.

Invincible - A Lesson For Your Next Life

Season Two of Invincible kicks off with a confusing opening sequence (making me wonder if I’d forgotten how Season One actually ended) with Invincible (Steven Yeun)  and Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) working together to prepare Earth for the arrival of the Viltrumites and grind what limited resistance remains on the planet to dust (which includes the brutal paralyzation of one of Mark’s former friends). The extended opener is revealed to be an alternate reality, one of several where Mark chose to partner with his father rather than stand-up to him, and then we’re thrown back into Mark’s reality where his attempts to get to normal and but his father’s betrayal behind him have had mixed results.
