Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 comic reviewBuffy Rebooted starts here. The popular franchise move from Dark Horse Comics to BOOM! Studios means a new start for the plucky heroine. And where better to start than the beginning? Writer Jordie Bellaire and artist Dan Mora take Buffy Summers back to Sunnydale High School in a re-imagining of the show’s first season.

Buffy’s mission and Watcher remain unchanged, and she still befriends both Willow and Xander (although the circumstances are slightly different). Some of my favorite moments here revolve around the trio together (both vegging out in front of the TV and their reaction to Buffy’s calling).

There are some differences including introducing Anya in the new series’ first issue not as a vengeance demon but as an underground broker of mystical artifacts. Also noticeable by their absence are Cordelia, Angel, and the Master. Nor do we see Dawn, so it seems Buffy will start high school sister-free. I’ll be curious to see who makes the cut into the new Buffyverse (and what other differences may be in store for all involved). Worth a look.
