Spidey Sunday takes us back to the late 70s and another Super-Story for Spider-Man. Unlike many issues in the title, Spidey Super-Stories #36 doesn’t involve a team-up for our hero in either the main story or either of the two backup stories. It’s far from the wackiest of the comic’s run, but there’s still some notable goofiness to be found.
The main story features a goofy tale of Spidey fighting the Lizard in both the sewers and streets of New York City where our hero’s attempts to cure the scientist lead him into turning the Lizard into a giant kaiju out to wreck the city.
“Ghosts and Goblins” is an odd bait-and-switch which starts with a gypsy’s seance leading to a robbery, but it turns out not to be the gypsy responsible but the Green Goblin who Spidey scares into giving back the loot.
The final story of the comic involves Plantman stealing all the flowers from a local competition, including Peter Parker’s prized poppies (say that three times fast). In a bit of Wizard of Oz themed nonsense, the villain uses Peter’s poppies to create knockout gas and kidnaps Mary Jane to be his bride.
