After wrapping up her latest case, which allows for a cameo from Reacher (Alan Ritchson), Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) learns of the sudden death of a childhood friend (Jhaleil Swaby) who walked in front of a subway train. Having lost touch in recent years, her concerns are raised aft learning he spent several years with a cult outside of Chicago. Neagley’s suspicions get further aroused after a short stop at the cult’s compound leading to an attempt on her life and several questions about what is really going on.
Along with setting up the case, the first episode of the series also lays the groundwork for the talented private investigator’s trouble working in a corporate office, dealing with her father’s illness, and introduces Adeline Rudolph as wannabe detective Renee Birdwhistle, Greyston Holt as Detective Hudson Riley looking for a big case to earn some credibility within the department, and Jasper Jones as a low-level street thief named Keno, all of whom help Neagley out over the course of the episode for their own reasons. For someone who says she only works alone, Neagley sure seems to be putting together a team.
