Sonjaversal #2

Sonjaversal #2 comic reviewThe second issue of Sonjaversal doesn’t do anything to clear up just what caused Red Sonja‘s current trouble of having Sonjas from every shade jump dimensions and attempt to kill her. While the comic restates the fact that Red Sonja has apparently done something to anger her god, we don’t see much evidence as to what that might be (other than perhaps the seemingly disconnected story of Sonja battling and then bedding an attractive warrior some time before any of these events were set in motion).

The second issue does clear up the confusion that the Sonja we see recruiting others is a Sonja and apparently the head acolyte to the god that Red Sonja has somehow offended. The story also seems to imply that the goddess is a bit flaky and isn’t above lashing out at perceived slights.

Nocterra #1

Nocterra #1 comic reviewWriter Scott Snyder and artist Tony S. Daniel reunite at Image Comics to offer a dystopian future tale of endless night. Anything living left in the darkness for more than 10 hours becomes a Shade which continue to evolve. Humanity is scattered across various outposts with those known as Ferrymen to transport them at great risk.

Our main character is Val. After a bit about her childhood prior to the fall of night and the rise of Shades, we see her fight off a pack of Shades and deliver a truck full of passengers to sanctuary after one of the passengers spooks and nearly gets them all killed. Among the group are an old man and young girl who offer Val a proposition she’s initially not interested in, but the deteriorating condition of her brother and the promise of true sanctuary is enough to hit the road one more time.

Debris - Pilot television review

The “Pilot” episode of Debris introduces us to MI6 agent Finola Jones (Riann Steele) and CIA agent Bryan Beneventi (Jonathan Tucker) who work together to deal with alien spacecraft debris which has unusual properties after hitting the Earth. Similar to The X-Files and Fringe, the show sets the stage for bizarre occurrences which will need to investigated. Unlike those shows, however, we know what is causing the odd incidents (although not what kind of chaos the various debris may unleash as they have very different properties). There’s not much wrong with the first episode, although it feels like yet another of “those shows” which despite a solid set-up and weird stuff to investigate every week doesn’t quite do enough to sell me on coming back week after week. Will I watch another episode? Probably. Is it must-see? Hardly.

MacGyver - Every Time She Smiles television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the original improvisational MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) armed only with genius-level intellect, a Swiss Army knife, and whatever he can cobble together to solve the problems of the week. After completing a simple handoff, MacGyver runs into trouble making it out of Bulgaria with microfilm when he runs into Penny Parker (Teri Hatcher) at the airport. Attempting to run off from her inattentive boyfriend (Kai Wulff) who turns out to be the son of the nephew of the Bulgarian Secret Police. While worried about the revolutionists and the microfilm, Stephan and his father are also concerned with recovering the jewelry in Penny’s possession which turns out to be priceless giving the state police two reasons to hunt the pair down (and also mistake Penny for a revolutionary).
