Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy - Siege Part 2 TV review

Ultra Magnus (Edward Bosco) turns himself over to the Decepticons in an attempt to force Optimus Prime‘s (Jake Foushee) hand to accept Megatron‘s (Jason Marnocha) truce and end the war. It’s Prime who is most unreasonable of any Transfromer introduced in the first two episodes, unwilling to give in or capitulate no matter the cost. Failing utterly, Magnus’ capture only strengthens the Decepticons resolve to wipe out the Autobots completely and allow for a trap that nearly takes out Prime. The series second episode also introduces the idea of the Allspark which both groups begin to search for. The Deceptions want the artifact in order to reformat all of the Autobots, and for the Autobots it’s last desperate attempt to keep fighting and prevent such technology falling into the hands of their enemy.

Super Dinosaur - Island of the Forgotten television review

“Island of the Forgotten” brings the return of Elliot (Tevon Herbert) who calls for back-up when he discovers Dino-Men on the a secret Earthcore training island. Having exhausted their time alone in the Dynamo Dome by celebrating Pizza Sandwich Day, Derek Dynamo (Valin Shinyei) and Super Dinosaur (Mac Heywood) head into action but are surprised by what they find: mutated Dino-Men hidden from Max Maximus (Marco Soriano) by Tricerachops (Kathleen Barr) who are in need of their help. Not only does the episode help redeem Elliot as more than just a prankster, it also continues the theme of Tricerachops working to try and find common ground with SD in hopes of making him part of the Dino-Men. We also see Tricerachops chaffing against Maximus and beginning to see a day where the Dino-Men may not need their creator any longer.

While they are able to take down the Mousers without much trouble, Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael, Jennika, and Michelangelo fall prey one-by-one to the larger threat in the sewers: the Slithery.

With so much of the Turtles’ recent action taking place above ground, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #107 takes advantage of the Heroes in a Half-shell returning to the familiar surroundings of the city’s sewers and offers some great panels from artist Nelson Daniel.

Altered Carbon - Nightmare Alley television review

With Takeshi Kovacs (Anthony Mackie) falling into the hands of his enemies, who still believe him to be the assassin they are after, “Nightmare Alley” provides the opportunity for the season’s torture episode. After identifying as Kovacs, our hero is sentenced to death in the Circle where warriors in sleeves of his closest friends are sent to kill him in the middle of an arena. Helping to tilt the odds against Kovacs, Carrera (Torben Liebrecht) pumps our protagonist full of drugs prior to sending him into battle. The structure of the episode allows for supporting characters from the show’s First Season to return as Ato Essandoh, Martha Higareda, and Dichen Lachman all return as the sleeves of killers out to win the big prize. Quellcrist Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry) is meant to be the fourth killer, but the real one shows up adding extra drama to the night’s proceedings.

Cursed - Nimue / Cursed television review

Based on Frank Miller‘s re-imagining of the King Arthur legend through the eyes of the girl who would become the Lady in the Lake, the first two episodes of Cursed introduce us to the outcast witch Nimue (Katherine Langford) who is scorned by her village for believing she was cursed as a child (a sequence shown in flashbacks in the second episode of the series). The maurading of Christian zealots known as the Red Paladins, out to destroy the Fey (all magical and non-Christian souls), leads to the destruction of Nimue’s village, the death of her mother (Catherine Walker), and a destiny entrusted to her to see a sword delivered to Merlin (Gustaf Skarsgård). I’ve seen both better and worse versions of the King Arthur legend, but, despite the slow moving first episode (and her inexplicable sudden control of a sword), I do like Langford in the role of the series’ lead.
