Scooby-Doo: Mystery Inc. #1 comic reviewThe 50th anniversary of Scooby Snacks offers the gang a chance to tour the Scooby Snacks factory. It also delivers a mystery when key ingredients to making Scooby Snacks begin being stolen.

First, a mummy steals the “mother dough” from which all Scooby Snacks are made. Next, another monster steals the gold flakes for the special anniversary edition of the treat. Add to that a ghost scaring people in the halls, and Mystery, Inc. has a new case.

Reprinted from Scooby-Doo 50th Anniversary Giant #1, the single-issue adventure offers the basic Scooby-Doo adventure with the group searching the factory for clues, running from ghosts, and setting a trap to catch the culprit.

Spider-Man review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the mean streets of New York City and the first appearance of a certain wall-crawling hero. 1977’s made-for-television movie Spider-Man casts Nicholas Hammond as college student and part-time photographer Peter Parker. The story, however, doesn’t open with Peter but with a mind-control plot involving a brainwashed lawyer and doctor who rob and bank and then crash their car on command from an unknown criminal (Thayer David) threatening this is only the first of many such attacks unless the city pays his ransom. The plot plays on 70s cults (as one turns out to be responsible for the brainwashing) as well as providing an origin story for Spider-Man whose further adventures would be continued in The Amazing Spider-Man television series.

Doom Patrol - Jane Patrol / Hair Patrol television review

“Jane Patrol” and “Hair Patrol” offer two stories that take place simultaneously following the tumultuous events of Karen being temporarily in control of Jane (Diane Guerrero) as Jane retreats far into herself. “Jane Patrol” focuses on the Negative Spirit putting Cliff (Brendan Fraser) inside Jane’s mind where we finally see the Underground fully realized. While he doesn’t belong, he wants to help. While being Cliff, he screws it up (at least for awhile). As an added bonus, the mental version of Cliff is still human (at least until he needs to call on his robot nature to help save his friend). At the same time their teammates are busy, “Hair Patrol” focuses on events in the manor where the bizarre Beard Hunter (Tommy Snider) arrives in search of the missing Niles Caulder (Timothy Dalton).

Stargirl - Shiv (Part One) television review

The first half of Stargirl‘s first two-part episode offers a closer look at the life of mean girl Cindy Burman (Meg DeLacy), the daughter of the Dragon King (Nelson Lee). Revealed to be even more of a terror than the previous episodes had foreshadowed, “Shiv Part One” introduces us to the first super-villain of the younger generation. While different in a number of other ways, the episode exposes one common similarity between both Cindy and Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) in their impatience at being asked to slow down and wait by their father figures. An order both ignore, leading Stargirl to discover the hidden pathways within the school and have a run-in with a villain her own age for a change.

Green Lantern 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular

Green Lantern 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular comic reviewThe latest DC 80th anniversary issue celebrates various Green Lantern characters including Alan Scott (the Golden Age Green Lantern who isn’t part of the Green Lantern Corps) but there are some notable absences of fan favorites as well such as Ch’p, Arisia Rrab, Katma Tui, Tomar-Re, G’nort, or Sojourner Mullein (who is at least included in a one-page art insert).

Along with the Alan Scott story, we get Earth’s greatest Green Lantern Hal Jordan in stories involving being trapped on a desolate world with his power ring running out, a team-up with Green Arrow written by Dennis O’Neil, and a story featuring Hal, John Stewart (who also gets a solo story), and Kyle Rayner (who sadly also gets a solo story) set years in the future.
