Batman Beyond - Spellbound television review

Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to the dystopian future of Gotham City. The aptly-named “Spellbound” introduces a new villain to the show in Spellbinder (Jon Cypher) who uses his knowledge of the human psyche and futuristic tech to trap victims in hallucinatory fantasies while tricking them into performing crimes for him. While the episode never really explains why the tech works on Terry (Will Friedle) through the suit, it does allow Terry to fight against the altered reality as Batman and the effect on villain’s other subjects is one of the best parts of the episode including a Raiders of the Lost Ark opening sequence. Along with a pretty good original villain in the mold of a character like Scarecrow, the episode is also notable for Terry’s first meeting (out of costume) with Commissioner Barbara Gordon (Stockard Channing).

Underdog - Safe Waif television review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to the misadventures of humble and lovable Shoeshine Boy, better known as everyone’s favorite rhyming canine super-hero Underdog. The first adventure (originally airing on October 3, 1964) features Underdog’s (Wally Cox) attempts to rescue a boy trapped in a bank vault. Setting ongoing themes which would follow throughout the show’s run, Underdog causes quite a bit of damage and panic with his heroics including first destroying the vault of the wrong bank and then setting another bank on fire only to put it out with super-breath which causes tornado-like force that levels most of the building. While none of the supporting characters appear in the first short, we do get the show’s humorous take on the famous crowd reaction to seeing Superman (along with Shoeshine transforming inside a telephone booth) and the show’s memorable theme song.

Harley Quinn #69 comic reviewHarley Quinn #69 offers a bizarre single-issue story centered around 70s McDonald’s nostalgia featuring loose knock-offs of characters like Grimace, Mayor McCheese, and the Hamburglar. The comic starts with the release from prison of the Hambezzler who has completed his 30 year prison sentence after being framed for a crime he didn’t commit (which doesn’t prevent his old pals getting together to get some payback). Luckily, he’s made a new friend in Harley Quinn who coincidentally needs her taxes done.

The Mandalorian - Sanctuary television review

In one of the weaker episodes of The Mandalorian‘s First Season, and oddly enough the only one that got its own LEGO set, the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and the Child attempt to hide out on Sorgan from those hunting them after breaking his contract with the Imperials and rescuing the 50 year-old infant from their secret laboratory. “Sanctuary” features a truncated Seven Samurai plot of the Mandalorian and his new pal former Rebel Alliance Shock trooper Cara Dune (Gina Carano) take too little money to protect an isolated village from bandits with an AT-ST. The army the pair put together is laughable, but the fight sequence at the end still works well enough.
