Suicide Squad

Suicide SquadMaybe DC should shy away from its major heroes and concentrate on the fringes of the DCU. I don’t know that you should call a $175 million theatrical release with an excessive marketing campaign a B-movie but that’s exactly what Suicide Squad is. Writer/director David Ayer delivers an unapologetically trashy B-movie that, despite its faults, is fun.

Sure, the script spends far too long awkwardly introducing the various super-villains thrown together by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) for her super-secret black ops squad. And yes, the final act suffers from a villain more interested in putting on a giant light show than presenting a coherent threat. However, somewhere in-between these problematic areas Ayer provides room for his cast of malcontents to shine.

Blindspot – The Complete First Season

Blindspot - The Complete First SeasonBurdened with a bizarre premise, Blindspot is a show that just never quite clicked for me. Opening with an amnesiac woman covered in tattoo clues to crimes which may or may not have happened yet who was found and taken in by the FBI, the First Season followed Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) and her FBI best bud Agent Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) to solve crimes by the timely deciphering of her tattoos all the while Weller is convinced Jane is a missing friend from his childhood (despite being told medically she couldn’t possibly be Taylor Shaw early in the season).

Devolving into conspiracy, Weller’s dysfunctional relationships, betrayal, and secrets the show’s writers have no intention of revealing anytime soon, Blindspot floundered through such an unremarkable First Season I’m actually surprised the show got picked up for a sophomore season. Collected on DVD and Blu-ray, extras include commentary for the Pilot, deleted scenes, and eight featurettes on the show, the cast, the tattoos, and more.

[Warner Home Video, Blu-ray $54.97 / DVD $49.99]

Mockingbird #5

Mockingbird #5The next stop on Mockingbird‘s search for answers about the unusual virus in her system is a super-secret S.H.I.E.L.D. medical lab deep below New York City where S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists have been experimenting with Bobbi’s blood on cadavers and accidentally created a group of rampaging zombies. You know, an average day in the life of a Marvel hero.

There’s plenty of action here along with Bobbi’s unusual new “glow stick hand power” which seems to repel zombies. Since that’s kind of a limited resource, I’ll be curious to see if Mockingbird can find additional uses for the new power. However, once overrun by zombies the hand power proves less than effective and it’s time for our hero to fall back to more traditional means of zombie fighting. Mockingbird smash!
