Supergirl - Blood Bonds

Opening with the short stand-off between Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Non (Chris Vance) that closed the mid-season cliffhanger, Nom’s men kidnap Hank Henshaw (David Harewood) in hopes of trading him for Astra (Laura Benanti). “Blood Bonds” deals primarily with Kara’s growing frustration and lack of control as Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) has guessed her secret and General Sam Lane (Glenn Morshower) shows up to take control of the DEO and decides to torture Astra for information.

Daredevil #2

Daredevil #2In both as a vigilante and in his new role as an Assistant District Attorney, Daredevil continues to take on the new gang leader Tenfingers whose control over his followers is explained in the new series’ second issue. Suffering a loss in the courtroom when Tenfingers’ agents manage to get to the state’s star witness is nothing compared to the trouble Daredevil steps in at the end of the issue when The Hand shows up to take back the power Tenfingers stole from them.

I understand the choice in putting Daredevil in the prosecutor’s office, but I’m having a hard time accepting Matt Murdock, the champion of lost causes and the little guy, in that role. Nor am I sold on his new sidekick Blindspot whose only interesting attribute two issues in seems to be his suit’s powered invisibility.

Love & Mercy

  • Title: Love & Mercy

Love & MercyLove & Mercy gives us two separate looks at the life of Brian Wilson (played by Paul Dano in the 1960s and John Cusack in the 80s). While the past deals with the beginning of Wilson’s mental instability the later storyline picks up years later with Wilson being taken advantage of by therapist Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti).

Although both stories are interesting by themselves, for me the two parts never came together. Dano is intriguing as the younger version, especially while struggling to create Pet Sounds. Cusack’s doped-up older version of the musician is far less interesting, but that plotline does give us Elizabeth Banks in one of the actress’ best performances. Several pieces and performances of Love & Mercy work well, including how director Bill Pohlad incorporates the Beach Boys‘ music, but the script struggles to merge the two-parts into a compelling whole while simplifying Wilson’s mental illness and Landy’s villainy for dramatic effect.

Galavant - A New Season AKA Suck It Cancellation Bear

ABC’s musical adventure comedy returns for a Second Season with Galavant (Harry Collett) and Richard (Timothy Omundson) ending the travels with the pirates and returning to solid land. Focused on returning Richard to his kingdom and saving Isabella (Karen David), who has been kept prisoner these many months by her adolescent cousin (Kemaal Deen-Ellis) who plans on marrying her, Galavant’s journey is sidetracked as he and Richard become lost in the Enchanted Forest. And by Enchanted Forest I mean the gay pub in the middle of the woods run by Kylie Minogue who refuses to let the heroic leading man leave.

Morning Glories #49

Morning Glories #49The day has arrived. Morning Glories #49 brings three ongoing stories to a head as the student elections, the Towerball tournament, and the Science Fair all occur in the first-half of the two-part season finale. While both Casey and Daramount assume Ike cheated to allow Casey’s unexpected win, the comic teases something else by tying Casey’s speech, her fainting spell, the Cylinder, and the election results all together in something far complicated that stuffing a ballot box.

Just as unlikely as Casey’s win, Guillaume‘s plan to do the impossible and win Towerball with the Blue Team is equally successful suggesting fallout for both parties in next month’s issue.
