Of all the classic Universal monsters, the Gill-man, also known simply as the Creature, was always my favorite. The plot of Creature from the Black Lagoon is pretty boilerplate with a group of scientists heading up the Amazon River looking the remainder of a fossilized skeleton of a fish man. Little do they know one of these creatures still exists. The setup works so well it would be copied by any number of horror movies for decades to come.

Returning to the comic’s original timeline, Vince awakes to his new life as a vampire… and (as we learn in the final panel) something else as well. Reintroducing the “current” timeline for us mostly through the young vamp’s eyes, we get Vince learning the hard way how hard it is to control his bloodlust (even from a friend) but also see how willing he is to stand by Gray when the pair are attacked by the vampire hunter Eda. Vince may be a vampire, but it appears that his love for Gray hasn’t waned.
