The Big Bang Theory - The Proton Transmogrification

Although Sheldon (Jim Parsons) initially appears unaffected by the news that his childhood idol Professor Proton (Bob Newhart) had died, the scientist finds his own way to work through the loss inspired by the man’s funeral taking place on Star Wars Day. As Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Howard (Simon Helberg) continue to celebrate without him, the physicist locks himself in his bedroom where he is visited in his dreams by and Obi-Wan version of the former science celebrity who, despite not knowing anything about Star Wars, eventually helps Sheldon admit and work through his grief.

Star Trek - The Man Trap

In the first episode of the series to air on television the USS Enterprise makes a routine stop at planet M-113 for Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) to give a yearly physical to scientist Robert Crater (Alfred Ryder) and his wife Nancy (Jeanne Bal), who happens to be former flame of McCoy. Odd instances begin almost instantly as all three members of the landing party see different version of the professor’s wife. Where Kirk (William Shatner) sees a middle-aged woman, Bones is surprised by a woman who hasn’t aged a day, and crewman Darnell (Michael Zaslow) sees an entirely different woman (Francine Pyne) altogether.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures #10

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures #10When Spider Bytez starts kidnapping people from the surface and dragging them down into his lair the Turtles hop into action, but are soon caught like flies in his web. Thankfully Michelangelo‘s plan to cover himself in pizza, based on his presumption that the disappearances are he result of the Kraang working with ghosts and Big Foot, proves to be the key to getting the Turtles out of another sticky situation.

Mikey slips out of the webs and distracts the villain, allowing Donatello, Raphael, and Leonardo time to escape and free the hostages before taking Mikey’s lead and further infuriating Spider Bytez with a few insults of their own.

The goofy adventure (set bizarrely around Valentine’s Day for a late April comic) is fun while highlighting another of the Turtles’ weirder villains. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures #10 also includes a Mikey back-up story where the Turtle’s one-track mind races his brothers into a desperate situation (which turns out to be pizza). Worth a look.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2Building on the groundwork laid two years ago in The Amazing Spider-Man, the sequel returns all the core members of the first film (minus the Lizard) while continuing the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and the harsh lessons which frame Spider-Man’s mythology.

Although needing to spend the time setting up two different villain origin stories, one of the aspects of the sequel I most enjoyed was the fact that it never lost focus that this is primarily Peter Parker’s movie. Jamie Foxx is adequate as Electro, a super-villain with the power to absorb and control electricity, even if he’s given a rushed paint-by-the-numbers origin that relies on the introverted electrical engineer going from confused super-powered freak just trying to understand what has happened to him and deal with his new taste for all things electric to full-on super-villain a little too quickly for my tastes. The same could be said for Harry Osborne (Dane DeHaan) whose relationship with Peter doesn’t have enough time to develop and deteriorate to the point that the script needs to earn its eventual payoff.
