Batman: Black and White #1

Batman: Black and White #1The newest volume of the anthology series Batman: Black and White features stories written and penned by some of comics best featuring an eclectic mix of Batman adventures. My two favorite stories of the collection involve a young Dick Grayson Robin and Superman searching for a missing Batman by Chip Kidd with terrific art by Michael Cho and a Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy adventure by Maris Wicks and Joseph A Quinones Jr. involving tainted hamburger meat that hearkens back to the glory days of Batman: The Animated Series.

Also include here are a Zombie Batman story written and drawn by Neal Adams (weird, and a tad too preachy) and Batman hunting down a determined Ventriloquist by Howard Mackie and Chris Samnee (I liked the art better than the story). The only story that didn’t work for me was the one offered by John Arcudi and Sean Murphy which turns the Dark Knight into a little too much of a gear-head for my tastes. Batman has had quite a career in comics over the years and this first issue gives us a little bit of everything from the Dark Knight’s past. Despite a $5 cover price and the lack of color and inks, fans should enjoy this one. Worth a look.

[DC, $4.99]

The Newsroom - Election Night, Part I

With Jerry Dantana (Hamish Linklater) officially filing suit against ACN for his termination the next morning, and Leona Lansing (Jane Fonda) adamantly refusing to accept anyone’s resignations or cut a deal with her former employee, News Night turns its attention to covering the 2012 elections in the first-half of the Second Season finale of The Newsroom. Although the elections, and the impending lawsuit, dominate the episode there’s plenty of room for behind the scenes insanity as Charlie‘s (Sam Waterston) no-mistake tirade version of a pep-talk leads to, you guessed it, an on air mistake and two of the show’s female leads become obsessed with mostly insignificant matters far outside their control.

Sinbad – The Complete Series

Sinbad - The Complete SeriesCreated by British Broadcasting’s Sky1 in an attempt to sell the character of Sinbad as a cool new family adventure, Sinbad lasted only a single season. The focus of the twelve episodes was the journey of Sinbad (Elliot Knight) from cursed small time thief into high seas adventurer with a motley crew of friends at his command (Marama CorlettElliot CowanDimitri LeonidasEstella DanielsJunix Inocian) while also fleeing from the witch Taryn (Orla Brady) and Lord Akbari (Naveen Andrews) who blamed the thief for the death of his son.

Over the course of the season Sinbad and his friends would battle witches, secret sects, various monsters, Sirens, Death itself, water spirits, and even get lost for a time in an otherworldly gambling den.

The production of the show often didn’t  measure up to the vision of the scripts (several episodes looked hastily scraped together most notably “Queen of the Water Thieves“).
