A (Not So) Good Day to Die Hard

A (Not So) Good Day to Die HardThe latest installment resembles the original Die Hard only in that it stars Bruce Willis and things blow up from time to time. To call Skip Woods‘ screenplay idiotic and ill-conceived would be an understatement. I’ve actually enjoyed every other Die Hard film so far, but the latest one chooses to put John McClane (Willis) in the role of comic relief while centering the movie around John’s thoroughly uninteresting son (Jai Courtney).

The plot, such as it is, involves evil Russian scientists and billionaires (Sebastian KochSergei Kolesnikov) who caused Chernobyl (on purpose). I swear I’m not making this up; somebody actually thought this was a good idea for a movie. Throw in McClane catching a plane to Russia to see his estranged son who has been arrested (but is really part of a super-secret CIA mission) and you’ve got a complicated mess of a story involving uninspired twists, shifting loyalties, and betrayal.

Lois & Clark: Strange Visitor (From Another Planet) / The Green, Green Glow of Home

With a new Superman in now in theaters every now and then I’ll continue to take a look back at the hero’s more memorable moments on both the big and small screen. Much of the First Season of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman centered around the various machinations of Lex Luthor (John Shea), but there were a pair of episodes that presented the Man of Steel with a completely different kind of adversary. “Strange Visitor (From Another Planet)” begins with shadowy government agent Jason Trask (Terence Knox) taking over the newsroom of the Daily Planet and hooking both Lois (Teri Hatcher) and Clark (Dean Cain) up to lie detectors in hopes of finding out more about the “alien menace” of Superman.

Ame-Comi Girls #5

Ame-Comi Girls #5Although it takes on the far distant planets of Thanagar and Rann, the Sinestra storyline continues here with the introduction and origins of two heroes: Hawkgirl and Alanna Strange. The first-half of the comic gives us the backstory of Hawkgirl before her planet is attacked by Sinestra and her army of Fear and Death which takes her husband in its service as a Black Lantern.

Although her planet is lost, Hawkgirl and several Thanagarians are saved by the quick thinking of Alanna Strange who transports as many away from the destruction as possible. From here we get an introduction of Alanna’s origins before the pair stop their bickering and agree to work together to stop Sinestra’s universe-wide path of destruction at a little blue planet known as Earth.

Although its themes can’t be called subtle, I really enjoyed the Hawkgirl story. The Strange story isn’t quite as strong, but it works as well to bring the characters together and set-up their eventual arrival on Earth. Worth a look.

The Top Ten Movies of 2013 (so far)

The Top Ten Movies of 2013 (so far)

Over the first-half of this year, movies have given us sequels, love that has stood the test of time, super-villains, heroes, young women on the wrong side of the law, baseball, magic, and dinosaurs. There have been plenty of disappointments to be sure, but we’re going to look on the positive side for the purposes of this list. Although I’ve been able to most the movies that intrigued me I will mention I have yet to see Joss Whedon‘s Much Ado About Nothing, The Place Behind the Pines, or the surprisingly well-received Mud so I can’t speak to whether or not either would have been good enough to make the final cut. Halfway through 2013 here’s a look back at the top ten movies (so far).
