The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Speckled Band

Sherlock Saturday takes us back to 221 B Baker Street and the Granada Television’s faithful adaptations of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. A locked-room mystery with a wicked reveal, “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” is one of my favorite Holmes short stories involving a dastardly plot by a greedy stepfather as Doctor Grimesby Roylott (Jeremy Kemp) targets the second of his two stepdaughters preventing a marriage which would force him to give up a sum for their dowry. As Holmes (Jeremy Brett) puts it here: “When a doctor goes wrong, he is the first of criminals. He has nerve. He has knowledge.”

Sherlock Saturday takes us back to another classic radio adventure featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Premiering on April 1, 1946 on The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio program, “The April Fools Day Adventure” offered the chance for Watson to join in on a little prank with Holmes leading to a genuine mystery and a first encounter with a character destined to be tied to the detective for years to come.

We’ll kick of Sherlock Saturday with a What If… Several shows over the years have created spin-offs with varying degrees of success, but what of the shows we could have gotten, one could argue should have gotten, but didn’t? For example, I offer you the idea of Natalie Dormer starring in a show centered around criminal mastermind Jamie Moriarty. One of the most interesting versions of the character we’ve ever seen, combining both Irene Adler and Professor James Moriarty into a single nemesis to rival, and emotionally torture, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller), she was the woman.
