From the opening credits, Top Gun: Maverick lays heavy into the nostalgia by recreating the opening of Top Gun. Not much has changed since we last saw Maverick (Tom Cruise), the film is deliberately vague about what year the movie takes place and exactly how much time has passed. Pete Mitchell is still the maverick who flies by the seat of his pants even if that has left him at yet another crossroads of his decorated, but rocky, career.

If you weren’t alive in 1986 it’s hard to explain how big Top Gun was. Now, nearly four decades later, a sequel is about to hit theaters so it’s time for Throwback Tuesday to look back at the movie which introduced us to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program and United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in a role that would solidify Tom Cruise as a movie star. Cruise so loved the film, he found a way to star in nearly the same story four years later with Days of Thunder.

Adapted from the animated TV-show of the same name, The Bob’s Burgers Movie is your typical sitcom expanded to a full-length film taking full advantage of the quirky and constantly struggling Belcher family attempting to make their way through a latest disaster. For the film this includes attempts to drum up business to make a mortgage payment while at the same time dealing with a giant sinkhole that appears in front of the restaurant.
Fans of the show will recognize themes including Bob (H. Jon Benjamin) slowly spiraling, Linda‘s (John Roberts) relentless optimism, and various peculiarities of their children who getting themselves entangled in a mystery after Louise (Kristen Schaal) discovers a skeleton in the sinkhole. The mystery allows the trio to ignore their own separate issues (a boy, a band, and a bully) and attempt to find the murderer and help the family save the restaurant.

The anticlimactic finale to the First Season of The Wheel of Time offers action as the city of Fal Dara is defended against the dark legion which descends. However, the true outcome of the battle is not decided there but in the middle of the Blight where Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) makes his stand against the Dark One (Fares Fares) who plays your basic devil’s bargain in offering Rand all he could possibly desire to free him. As devil’s tricks go, there’s nothing all that interesting or elegant here and our first encounter with the Dark One proves far less impressive than that of Logain Ablar (Álvaro Morte) earlier in the season.
