Black Widow #12

Calling in a couple of friends in Bucky Barnes and Clint Baton, Natalie rounds up the girls and hits the Golden Gate Gala where she’s been told there’s information to be found and something far more nefarious underneath the upscale atmosphere. Ditching the party early, Lucy and Anya uncover a bizarre secret auction in the basement of the building before going silent leading to the Widows going to Plan B and taking a more direct approach to uncover just what the hell is going on.

There’s a lot of slow building set-up here, but eventually things get interesting. Although her Spidey-sense (so to speak) is aroused the entire evening, Black Widow is unprepared for what, or more precisely who, she finds. Whoever the Living Blade is, Natasha has tangled with him before (and he’s certainly made an impression).

The Lost Symbol – Noögenesis

  • Title: The Lost Symbol – Noögenesis
  • IMDb: link

“Noögenesis” fills in the events of Zachary Solomon’s transformation into Mal’akh (Beau Knapp), without actually explaining much of anything on how he died but survived in prison and was reborn. There’s really nothing to be gained from the episode other than than to prolong the larger mystery another week. Mark Gibbon guest-stars as the cryptic mentor Zachary found in prison who taught him impossible healing techniques based on humming and heavy breathing. Yes, it’s as ridiculous as it sounds.

Hellboy: The Silver Lantern Club #1

Set in 50s London, The Silver Lantern Club #1 introduces Hellboy to Trevor’s uncle Simon Bruttenholm who has stories aplenty to tell of his spooky former adventures with a secret British paranormal society known as the Silver Lantern Club. Most of the issue takes place in flashbacks of Simon recounting his tale how an early wireless transceiver which trapped a demonic creature recently exorcised by members of the club.

Even if the adventure itself doesn’t feature Hellboy, and we get the titular character only in the bookends to the flashback, there’s still some fun to be had (especially in the manner which the demon was defeated, which I won’t ruin here).  Since it appears Simon has more stories to tell, at least until the pub’s last call, this is just the start of the mini-series.
