The Girl in the Woods – The Guardian

The opening episode of the new Peacock series introduces us to a traumatized young woman named Carrie (Stefanie Scott) who abandons her religious commune in the woods and her responsibilities of protecting a door deep in the woods from which monsters can enter our world. The cult seems to have all the time in the world to search for Carrie but not offer any help in guarding the door from the horrors on the other side. When a young girl (Lily Jane) is taken by one of the monsters, Carrie will team up with the girl’s older brother (Misha Osherovich) and a new friend (Sofia Bryant) to find her. The search will continue past the show’s first episode, which may offer plenty of cliched young adult trapping thrown together on a shoestring budget but little reason to stick around and learn more about what’s really happening in the woods.

Wonder Woman: Black & Gold #5

Wonder Woman: Black & Gold #5 offers black and white tales, with a flourish of gold, featuring Wonder Woman. My favorite of the tales, “Feet of Clay,” is told from the point of view of the Amazons’ greatest general, Antiope, who is reluctantly brought out of retirement to train Hippolyta‘s precocious young daughter molded from clay and given life by the gods (keeping with Wonder Woman’s original origin). The story highlights the pair’s unique relationship, and the similarities the two warrior women share.

In “Hellzapoppin'” Diana visits Hephaestus only to discover the forge of the gods in disarray leading to battle through Hell in a search for her missing friend.  Ships of Themyscira are attacked by a sea ghost in “Beyond the Horizon” and a confrontation with a spirit in torment deep in the ocean’s depths.

The Blacklist – The Skinner (Conclusion)

  • Title: The Blacklist – The Skinner (Conclusion)

The season premiere of The Blacklist concludes with the team fully reinstated, Raymond Reddington (James Spader) using a case to bolster his own power base once again, and the safe return of the kidnapped family. While the team is successful without the help of a profiler, the tactic of running to tell daddy (i.e. the former heads of the secret organization) on the bad guy of the week isn’t exactly one of the show’s strongest resolutions. Still missing an important piece of the team, and a key member of the show’s cast, can The Blacklist find it’s footing without Elizabeth Keen? Evidence so far is inconclusive.
