Guilty Pleasure – Tekken

Tekken movie reviewThrowback Tuesday takes us back to 2009’s adaptation of the Tekken video game franchise. Set in a dystopian 2039, the film follows Jin Kazama (Jonathan Patrick Foo) enter the Iron Fist tournament after the death of his mother (Tamlyn Tomita) where he’ll face off against the likes of Marshall Law (Cung Le), Miguel Caballero Rojo (Roger Huerta), Yoshimitsu (Gary Ray Stearns), and Bryan Fury (Gary Daniels) while hoping to kill the man he blames for his mother’s death Heihachi Mishima (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa).

Tekken is a throwaway action flick that offers some fun while it focuses on the tournament and Jin’s journey. Sure, it gets a bit lost when Kazuya Mishima (Ian Anthony Dale) begins screwing with the tournament in order to kill Jin before he has a chance to win, revealing the truth about Jin’s parentage in the process, but there’s plenty of dumb fun to go around and we get Kelly Overton looking as good as humanly possible as the flirtatious Christie Monteiro, along with Candîce Hillebrand and Marian Zapico as the Williams sisters and Mircea Monroe as Jin’s girlfriend.

The Leverage team use a fantasy card game to target a greedy CEO (Max Sheldon) known for buying up paramedical companies and jacking up the prices of medical drugs while stalling research on potential cures. Using the target’s interest in the game, the team attempts to sell him his heart’s desire which becomes more complicated when the creator (French Stewart) of the game shows up willing to sell. Now to beat the man, the team will need to prove his unworthiness and show him up at the game’s annual celebration which offers opportunities for Eliot (Christian Kane) to go medieval on some thugs, Breanna (Aleyse Shannon) to use her love for the game to help Parker (Beth Riesgraf) find buried treasure, and to remind us that Sophie (Gina Bellman) is only good on stage when it’s part of the con.

Defenders #1

Defenders #1 comic reviewThe arrival of the new Masked Raider inside the Sanctum Sanctorum with the story of a villain of the Enclave lost in time that could alter the past prompts to use fate and create a new team of Defenders to save the timeline. The team he gets is not exactly what he expected. Welcome to the latest version of the Defenders.

Along with Strange and the Raider, the other members of the team are the Silver Surfer, the Red Harpy, and Cloud. While we get appearances from the various characters here, we don’t get much in the way of interaction (other than confusion as to being pulled out of time and space by Dr. Strange’s spell and delivered to the planet of Taa) while most of the comic centers around the Raider explaining the trouble to the good Doctor.
