5 Film Collection: Monster Mayhem DVD reviewThis collection of five films from Legendary Pictures may not have any true stand-out, but it does have some enjoyable monster movies. While there are others that likely enjoy the film more than I do, Pacific Rim does offer crazy monster-on-robot action as humanity’s last hope against invading Kaiju turns out to be dual-controlled giant robotic warriors (including one controlled by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi). In that same vein, the fantasy Jack the Giant Slayer takes the classic fairy tale to new directions in a straightforward hero’s quest by Jack (Nicholas Hoult) rescues Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson) from giants. 2014’s Godzilla remake might not be as good as the recent Kong: Skull Island, but provides monster-on-monster action as Godzilla appears to battle the film’s other creatures.

Super Sons #2

Super Sons #2 comic reviewCaught snooping by Lex Luthor, Robin and Superboy manage to get away thanks to a little misdirection and Damian threatening to blow up the LexCorp laboratory. Luthor’s reaction to the entire encounter is puzzling.

Taking them for a pair of common kids (climbing up the sheer side of a skyscraper), this raises some questions. While it is plausible that Lex has no idea that Jonathan exists, has this version of Lex never run into Robin before? This seems extremely unlikely, and even if that’s true wouldn’t he still know what the Boy Wonder looks like by knowing his former enemies and their sidekicks?

The Flash - The Wrath of Savitar television review

Following the two-parter featuring Grodd and his army of apes, The Flash falls back into some bad habits I had hoped were behind the series this season. The return of Savitar means the return of dickish Barry (Grant Gustin). After somehow viewing the scene of the future without Barry and his memories, Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) blurting out a questionable conclusion puts Barry and Iris (Candice Patton) back three steps from last week’s engagement. And the team’s insensitive use of Julian (Tom Felton) puts strain on his burgeoning relationship with Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker). Oh, and Caitlin reveals she’s put everyone’s lives in danger for weeks by hiding a powerful relic in the lab. Seriously, did Grodd mindfuck these people while I wasn’t looking because they are all pretty much acting like bad (and dumb) examples of themselves for the entire episode.

The Blacklist: Redemption - Kevin Jensen TV review

The second episode of The Blacklist: Redemption pushes the theme of mothers and lost sons with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. When the son of an old friend is detained and tortured in Kyrkistan by government officials who believe the journalist is actually a CIA spy, Scottie Hargrave (Famke Janssen) mounts a rescue mission despite the United States Government explicitly ordering her not to. The plan has more than a few kinks to work out, although Tom (Ryan Eggold), Solomon (Edi Gathegi), and Nez (Tawny Cypress) are able to extract the man from a maximum-security prison with few resources at their disposal.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Blu-ray reviewIt’s somewhat amazing that between X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine that 20th Century Fox didn’t manage to destroy their X-Men movie franchise. For Throwback Thursday we take a look back at the first of the Wolverine standalone films. X-Men Origins: Wolverine delves into the unexplored past of Logan (Hugh Jackman) while continuing to refuse to quite nail down the exact date of his birth. Not fitting in at all with the timeline of the other X-Men films, the movie has been largely ignored in current continuity (although one important aspect does return in Logan).

Along with a brief introduction of Logan as a child, and a montage of him working with Team X, the story jumps forward to events which will pull him out of his quiet life in the Canadian wilderness with Silverfox (Lynn Collins) and lead to both his adamantium upgrade and events which will cause him to lose memories of his past.
