Legends of Tomorrow - The Complete First SeasonBuilding on the DC TV Universe created in Arrow and The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is a mixed bag. Cobbling together characters created for the show and others introduced on the on the other two shows as an unruly bunch of time travelers out to save the future, the show had more than few ups and downs during its First Season. Time Master Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) plucks a group of heroes and villains from modern day (rather than choose heroes from a wide swath of time which would have made more sense) to save his family and stop the villainous immortal Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) from conquering the world.

Jumping through time, the First Season did have its moments such as a bleak future for Star City and Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and Kendra (Ciara Renée) getting stranded in 1958, but also some clunkers such as the team’s stop in the Old West.

Suicide Squad

Suicide SquadMaybe DC should shy away from its major heroes and concentrate on the fringes of the DCU. I don’t know that you should call a $175 million theatrical release with an excessive marketing campaign a B-movie but that’s exactly what Suicide Squad is. Writer/director David Ayer delivers an unapologetically trashy B-movie that, despite its faults, is fun.

Sure, the script spends far too long awkwardly introducing the various super-villains thrown together by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) for her super-secret black ops squad. And yes, the final act suffers from a villain more interested in putting on a giant light show than presenting a coherent threat. However, somewhere in-between these problematic areas Ayer provides room for his cast of malcontents to shine.

Allegiant

AllegiantAfter learning their entire civilization is nothing more than a science experiment, first-half of the final book in the Divergent series follows Tris (Shailene Woodley), Four (Theo James), Christina (Zoë Kravitz), and Peter (Miles Teller) over the wall, through the desolate wasteland and into an advanced city run by the Bureau of Genetic Welfare (which, you guessed it, turns out to be as equally corrupt as the society they fashioned in an attempt undo centuries of genetic manipulation).

Allegiant follows the same predicable patterns of the first two films, including a major supporting character’s death early on, before uniting the faction-less Chicago (which has broken into mob rule since learning the truth about the outside world) under a common purpose for next year’s series finale. While finally offering a reason for the bizarre society of single-characteristic factions, Allegiant still doesn’t make the premise any easier to swallow. Jeff Daniels (who I’m assuming must have a daughter who likes these books) is slumming it here as the leader of the genetic zealots behind the curtain.

Our Kind of TraitorAs spy stories often do, Our Kind of Traitor opens in Russia. However, for our protagonist things begin far away from Moscow. On vacation with his wife Gail (Naomie Harris), Perry (Ewan McGregor) has a chance encounter with a Russian gangster named Dima (Stellan Skarsgård). One wild night later, Perry is presented with an offer he can’t refuse.

With the murder of his business partner and his entire family in the movie’s opening scene, Dima is desperate for any help he can get. As unlikely a candidate a college poetry professor is, Perry proves to be Dima’s only hope to save himself and his family from meeting the same gruesome fate. Convincing Perry to take a flash drive to MI6 on his return to London proves to be only the first step in getting the professor caught up in the world of the Russian money launderer.

Like many spy novels, Our Kind of Traitor offers various twists and turns including a British agent (Damian Lewis) who lies to get Dima’s information for personal reasons leading to further complications. And like many movies adapted from novels, I’m guessing the book was better.

Seeking to set right a past wrong, Gamora (Vanessa Marshall) ditches the rest of the Guardians and attempts to return the Gravity Matrix she once stole for Ronan to the planet of Soonevh. Unaware she’s walking into a trap set by Ronan (Jonathan Adams) and Nebula (Cree Summer), Gamora is forced into gladiator-style combat to save the planet (if not herself) from Ronan’s wrath. Thankfully, her pals don’t hold her zapping them into submission against her and show up just in the nick of time.
