Beware the Batman: Allies

Batman (Anthony Ruivivar)and Katana‘s (Sumalee Montano) new partnership will be put to the test when Lt. Gordon‘s (Kurtwood Smith) daughter is kidnapped by Tobias Whale‘s (Michael-Leon Wooley) goons who want the release of their leader from prison in return for letting the Barbara “Girl Hostage” Gordon (Tara Strong)  go. Although Strong gives Barbara a strong spirit I’m already sensing a bit of a trend here as nearly every appearance by Babs leads to her being attacked and/or abducted and saved by Batman.

Grodd #1

Grodd #1The basic premise of these Forever Evil .1 tie-in issues is to show fans what the bigger name villians get up to when the heroes of the DCU disappear. This is problematic for the obvious reason that you’re buying a comic to see the hero’s adventures and with The Flash #23.1 it’s also an issue as the New 52 version of Grodd is fare less interesting than the original.

What made Grodd originally interesting (and ridiculous) was the character’s great intellect shoved into a gorilla’s body. Here we’re left with a brutal warrior without the cunning or charm of the original.

On the eve of a peaceful Gorilla City officially becoming a neighbor of Central City (so much for the invisible African home) a Speed-Force-infused Grodd shows up to take control of his former warriors leading to bloodshed. Yeah, it’s Planet of the Apes.

It’s not a bad issue and its competently told, but without the Flash, regular co-writer and artist Francis Manapaul, or a willingness to embrace the absurdity of the hero’s Rogues it does feel a bit flat. Hit-and-Miss.

[DC, $2.99]

Sinbad - The Complete SeriesCreated by British Broadcasting’s Sky1 in an attempt to sell the character of Sinbad as a cool new family adventure, Sinbad lasted only a single season. The focus of the twelve episodes was the journey of Sinbad (Elliot Knight) from cursed small time thief into high seas adventurer with a motley crew of friends at his command (Marama CorlettElliot CowanDimitri LeonidasEstella DanielsJunix Inocian) while also fleeing from the witch Taryn (Orla Brady) and Lord Akbari (Naveen Andrews) who blamed the thief for the death of his son.

Over the course of the season Sinbad and his friends would battle witches, secret sects, various monsters, Sirens, Death itself, water spirits, and even get lost for a time in an otherworldly gambling den.

The production of the show often didn’t  measure up to the vision of the scripts (several episodes looked hastily scraped together most notably “Queen of the Water Thieves“).

Guilty Pleasure – Action Jackson

  • Title: Action Jackson
  • IMDB: link

Action Jackson1988’s attempt to turn Carl Weathers into an action star leading man fizzled with both audiences and critics making less money than Funny Farm, Short Circuit 2, or Ernest Saves Christmas. The premise of the film was to cast Weathers as the toughest cop in town (who we know is tough because various supporting members of the cast keep telling us that Jackson is such a bad ass).

The storyline involved Detroit Detective “Action” Jackson taking a second run at a powerful local businessman (Craig T. Nelson) Jackson knew, but was unable to tie, to the deaths of several union members who worked for the man’s company. When Dellaplane’s wife (Sharon Stone) comes forward to offer Jackson the proof he needs to take the man down, the auto magnate frames the cop for her murder forcing Jackson to rely on the help of Dellaplane’s heroin-addicted mistress (Vanity) and a hairdresser (Armelia McQueen), to prove his innocence and set things right.
