Defenders #1 comic reviewThe arrival of the new Masked Raider inside the Sanctum Sanctorum with the story of a villain of the Enclave lost in time that could alter the past prompts to use fate and create a new team of Defenders to save the timeline. The team he gets is not exactly what he expected. Welcome to the latest version of the Defenders.

Along with Strange and the Raider, the other members of the team are the Silver Surfer, the Red Harpy, and Cloud. While we get appearances from the various characters here, we don’t get much in the way of interaction (other than confusion as to being pulled out of time and space by Dr. Strange’s spell and delivered to the planet of Taa) while most of the comic centers around the Raider explaining the trouble to the good Doctor.

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #2 comic reviewThe black, white, and red anthology series continues with three more tales of Red Sonja from different writers and artists. “Proelium Finalis” features Queen Sonja defending her kingdom against a legion of Lemurians led by Al-Ammon while suggesting the possibility that it might be the warrior’s last battle.

The most comical (and by far the least bloody) of the three tales, “Edible” leads Sonja in search of a missing young girl inside a mysterious bog that wants to devour them both. It’s by her wits, rather than her sword arm, that Red Sonja survives.

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #285

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #285 comic review“Murder by Assassination” concludes as the Joes track Al Kawbra to the jungles of Amara Wapoor where they find an army of upgraded Cobra B.A.T.s protecting a secret facility. Although the team is able to fight their way into the facility and ultimately capture their target, Overkill manages to escape with containers full of specialized B.A.T. soldiers foreshadowing some future plan the Joes will have to stop.

Most of the comic centers around the firefight to get into the facility, although several panels are set aside at the end for a final battle between Sherlock and Al Kawbra. The capture of Al Kawbra gives Sherlock some closure to her early journey with G.I. JOE. The character is revealed to be one of the Fred series of Crimson Guards who have troubled the Joes in the past. Although his schemes may have come to an end, the escape of Overkill suggests the events Al Kawbra set into motion are far from finished.

Suicide Squad #6

Suicide Squad #6 comic reviewWaller sends the Squad to Earth-3 after the captured Bloodsport and his original target Black Siren (although Wallers seems more interested in the latter than the former). Elsewhere, back on Prime Earth, Peacemaker takes a team in search of Swamp Thing in a plot thread that still hasn’t gotten going yet.

The second issue arc offers another appearance of Ultraman, although this time the Squad has a Superboy to help even the odds. The mystery about Superboy comes up again in this issue, and it will likely only deepen with the appearance of an unexpected hero when the the Squad returns home.

X-Men #2

X-Men #2 comic reviewCordyceps Jones continues to run bets on who can successfully destroy Earth as another threat hits the planet in the form of an Annihilation Wave (which works as a kind of monstrous blob destroying everything in its path).

X-Men Assemble! Sunfire gets a nice moment here, as do the entire team in the aftermath of the battle as we see a far warmer reception by the locals to the X-Men stepping up to save the day than mutants have generally received in the past.
