Locke & Key - Welcome to Matheson television review

Adapted from the comic of the same name, the opening episode of Locke & Key introduces us to the Locke family who relocates to Matheson, Massachusetts. Following the murder of her husband Randall (Bill Heck), Nina (Darby Stanchfield) takes the kids to the family’s ancestral home known as Keyhouse Manor. After a quick tour from their uncle (Aaron Ashmore), Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), settle into their new home. Bode is the first to recognize that there is something unusual with the house, first in the form of an Echo (Laysla De Oliveira) speaking to him from a well and later in finding magical keys around the house (each which holds a different power).

Samurai Jack - Episode XXI: Jack and the Dragon television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the adventures of the time-displaced samurai and his quest to make his way home. Jack‘s (Phil LaMarr) wanderings lead him into woods and a nearby village both plagued with an ungodly stench. Many of the early scenes feature Jack trying to keep the stench away (which his sword can miraculously cut through) and haggling with the Scissorsmith (John Kassir) of the town, unwilling to offer up any information for free (even if it might help save the town from the stench which is ruining their crops and forcing wildlife to flee). The man’s bird (which may or may not have once been his wife) proves more helpful in starting the samurai on the right path.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Too Long A Sacrifice #1 comicsSet during the time of the Dominion War, after Worf‘s appointment to the station but prior to the death of Jadzia Dax, the first issue of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Too Long A Sacrifice gives us an explosion in the promenade and rising tensions aboard a station already at war. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine has largely been ignored by comics (this marks the first new comic featuring the series in a decade).

Many of the staples of the series are here including Dr. Bashir and Garak enjoying lunch (and surviving the blast that destroys the restaurant). Framing the issue around a mystery for Odo to solve offers a good point of reference for the mini-series. We’re also given our first red herring as early evidence points to Quark being responsible for the destruction of a competitor.

Catwoman #23 comic reviewIn the first half of a two-part story, Catwoman #23 takes Selina Kyle to Isla Nevada, an island filled with diamonds and violent criminals. And cats. Very large cats. The island’s inhabitants also include a very 80s associate of Selina’s holding a black market auction who needs help as several of his men have gone missing with locals believing a local legend is responsible.

While the auction draws Catwoman’s interest, we never learn exactly what her business in Isla Nevada is before we find Selina in the jungle protecting a not-so-mythical large panther from a pair of Snow Flame’s minions. You know what they say about good deeds…

Danger Man - Under the Lake television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back into the Cold War spycraft of Danger Man. John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) follows General Gunther von Klaus (Christopher Rhodes) and his daughter Mitzi (Moira Redmond) across Europe when authorities identify von Klaus as a suspect involved in the millions of counterfeit United States currency showing up all around the world. Meeting the pair on a train, and following them to an isolated retreat, Drake attempts to feign interest in the young woman while learning as much as possible about her father. It’s not until the end of “Under the Lake” that the episode’s title is explained as Drake and Mitzi run for their lives from von Klaus’ partner (Roger Delgado) and his minions. Despite the tragedy of the father, Drake is able to save the daughter and stay alive long enough for help to arrive.
