Fantastic Four #48

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the first appearance of Galactus as Fantastic Four Week continues. Released at the end of 1965, Fantastic Four #48 begins with the Fantastic Four defeating Maximus, in kind of a weird disconnected story, and returning home to find the skies of New York on fire. Inside the Baxter Building, the group are met by the Watcher who is attempting to shield the planet of prying eyes from the most dangerous threat the Fantastic Four, or the Earth, have ever encountered.

Rick and Morty – Cryo Mort a Rickver

  • Title: Rick and Morty – Cryo Mort a Rickver

“Cryo Mort a Rickver” is a thinly-written premise that allows for constant craziness when Rick (Ian Cardoni) and Morty‘s (Harry Belden) attempt to loot a cyroship lead to the accidental awakening of the crew and the pair attempting to fake being part of those awoken. For Rick, this means pretending to be preadolescent whose appearance is explained by something having gone wrong with his pod. Sadly for Morty, he ends up not as a rich traveler but as a member of the underclass of the crew who he unintentionally inspires to rise up causing chaos. You know, Morty being Morty. Everything culminates in a bloody massacre followed by a space race (which is only slightly less crazy than the fights to the death in space that occurs afterward).

Superman

  • Title: Superman (2025)

It may not be great, but James Gunn‘s first outing with the Man of Steel certainly outshines any recent depictions of the character. Not shying away from the immigrant story of an alien adopted by human parents making Earth his home, 2025’s Superman does what David Goyer and Zack Snyder struggled so mightily with every step of the DCEU – it finds the heart of the character who, despite being alien, is human in all the right ways.

Superman captures some of the feel of Richard Donner‘s original while also adding enough of its own touches (including teasing us with variations to John Williams‘ original theme) to make it stand out more than Superman Returns. It’s a bit too zany in places for me, and a bit too obvious in nods to current events, but when Superman stays focused on its titular character there’s an awful lot to like here.

Rick and Morty – Ricker than Fiction

  • Title: Rick and Morty – Ricker than Fiction
  • wiki: link

After an extreme reaction to the latest sequel in the Maximum Velocitree franchise, Rick (Ian Cardoni) and Morty (Harry Belden) set out to prove they can do better. However, after the pair are pulled into Movie-lizer Rick creates to fix the movie script they are forced to make all their changes make sense and find a way to get back to a reasonable ending which is the only way they can escape the movie. With more of nod to Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s “Elementary, Dear Data” than the movie it steals its title from, a simple misspoken sentence by Rick leads to the trouble the pair find themselves in leaving Jerry (Chris Parnell) to try and right the script from the real world.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – A League for Justice #1

Obviously set within the world of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, after an introduction by Adam Strange about Kryptonians and search for artifacts in this world (summarizing events from the Kryptonian Age mini-series) for those unfamiliar with the world, Gotham by Gaslight – A League for Justice begins with Batman, Wonder Woman, Alan Scott, and the Martian Manhunter (with the latter two having  issues with each other to work out) in a stand-off with Superman on the dirt streets of Smallville. Apparently all arriving separately, the group breaks into private squabbles with some helping Superman with the Victorian Age versions of various DC villains robbing the local bank and Batman fading into the night with what he came for.
